His Death Was Sudden

The death of the late Edsko Hekman came as a complete surprise Monday evening. He has been ill for several weeks, but few thought he was failing. He had been enjoying a lunch at his home, 1406 Grandville Avenue, and remarked to his wife that he would read a little if he had his glasses. While there were being sought he expired. The deceased was 59 years old, and is survived by his widow and three sons, Henry, John and Jelle.

Mr. Hekman was a pioneer; he was a man who made rapid strides in business life, after coming here some twenty-four years ago from his birthplace, Winschoten, Netherlands. He first began making Dutch cookies and other specialties; these found ready sale, and later on he and his sons entered into an extensive business. They built and own the big factory on Grandville Avenue. On two occasions they have had to enlarge the plant; once they burned out, but rebuilt at once.

Mr. Hekman established a branch in Denver, Colorado which has grown rapidly. Their goods are well known and in much demand.

The deceased was a member of the consistory of the Grandville Avenue Christian Reformed church, at one time and of which he was an honored member. He was active in church and philanthropic circles, was president of the Grandville Avenue Christian school, as well as holding the same position of the Bethesda Tuberculosis sanitarium at Denver, Colorado.

Funeral services were held Thursday from the church.
