1948 - R. Wallace Hook-
Mr. Hook died unexpectedly Sunday, March 7, following a heart
attack in the apartment at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he and Mrs. Hook had
been vacationing for 10 days.
He was general manager of the three plants of Grand Rapids Metalcraft
corporation, division of F.L. Jacobs Co., Detroit, of which he was a director and
vice president.
He was born in Chicago 56 years ago. He attended public schools at Adrian, Mi.,
and after employment as a bookkeeper at Adrian, he become correspondent for a
Detroit publishing firm.
After association with the Journal of Electricity in San Francisco, he returne to Detroit
as an insurance executive.
He moved to Grand Rapids in 1914 and formed the Lightning Calculator Company. In
1924 he became general manager of Doerr Manufacturing Company, which later
was reorganized as Grand Rapids Metalcraft corporation with Mr. Hook as president.
The company had 12 employes and was engaged primarily in production of ash receivers
for automobiles.
The company merged with the Jacobs firm in 1936 and now has 1,000 employees.
He had been an active member of the club for many years and also was affiliated
With Blythefield country Club. He attended Grace Episcopal church.
Besides the widow, he is survived by three sons, R. Wallace Hook, Jr., and James
Hook of Grand Rapids, and Robert Hook of Greenville; and a brother, Lloyd l. Hook,
also of Grand Rapids.
Funeral service were held at the residence with interment in Rosedale Memorial Park.
