In Memoriam - Rayland Henry Rhodes

Rayland Henry Rhodes was born in Grattan, March 6, 1893. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Rhodes and spent his boyhood days in that place, except two years, when he was in Hillsborough, Oregon, and three years in Grand Rapids.

He was married to Etta Campbell April 19, 1908. They lived in Hillsborough, Oregon a short time, then returned to his old home, where they lived until three years ago, when they moved to Grand Rapids, where he has lived until his death, which occurred Friday, October 26, 1917, after a short illness of pneumonia.

This young life ended where manhood’s morning scarcely touches noon, for being weary he lay down by the wayside and using his burden for a pillow, fell into that dreamless sleep that kisses down his eyelids still.

Yet, after all, it may be best, just when manhood was unfolding possibilities of life, to be borne away among the breakers of the further shore.

All nature teaches the lesson of mortality. Everything that is born must die. We are received from the arms of birth with smiles; we are laid in the arms of death with tears.

Many relatives and friends gathered at Grattan Monday, October 29, where the funeral took place, Rev. Sheneman of the M.E. church officiating. The deceased leaves a wife and two children--George W., aged seven, and Fonda, aged five years; his father and mother; three brothers--Verne of Grand Rapids; Wirt, who is serving in the United States army; Elter of Ionia; also four sisters--Mrs. Seymour Lyons of Greenville; Mrs. Glenn Spicer of Grattan; Mrs. Jerry Bomers, and Mrs. Arthur Anable of Grand Rapids. The burial was in the family lot at Grattan, brothers acting as pallbearers. As the casket was lowered to it final couch the autumn sun bid farewell to a loved one gone and flowers, symbols of love and sympathy, gave a silent prayer to his sacred dust.
