Edward Maxwell Smith was born in Detroit, Michigan on 24 October 1846, the son of John and Jane Smith and came with his parents to the township of Cannon, Kent County, when one year old. At the age of 17 years he enlisted in the 6^th Michigan Cavalry and at the end of the Civil war was ordered west to fight Indians.

He was mustered out of service at Salt Lake, Utah, and remained in the west for a number of years.

He was united in marriage with Caroline Crissey Phelps on 4 October 1913 who preceded him in death just one week.

He passed away 20 April 1928, aged 81 years, 6 months and 20 days and was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Cedar Springs cemetery.

He leaves one brother, Alex Smith, and some nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
