12/1941 - H. Wibert Spence, retired insurance executive, who died at his residence, 1018 Cherry St., S.E., following an illness of several months, had been and active and loyal member of the Club for a number of years. He was a member of the Boosters Club and was a regular attendant at all the important events on the Club’s calendar of activities. His death is felt as a keen personal loss to his many friends throughout the organization.
Except for a brief interim in Detroit, Mr. Spence had been a resident of Grand Rapids since 1906 when he came here from Buffalo, his birthplace.He joined Mutual Life Insurance Co., in Buffalo as a saleman. During most of his residence in Grand Rapids he was in charge of the firm’s Michigan busimness and manager of the Grand Rapids area. He retired in 1937 after 38 years as insurance saleman and executive.
At the time of his death he was state and local president of the Sons of the American Revolution in which organization he had been active many years. He was affiliated with several Masonic groups and held membership in ascade Country Club, the Breakfast Club and Royal Order of Jesters.
He is survived by the widow, Besse; two sons, J. Wibert, Jr., South Bend, Ind., and Francis Spence of Florida; a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Smith of Grand Rapids, and three grandchildren.
