.Mrs. George G. Steketee, for 45 years a resident of Grand Rapids, died Saturday morning at her home, 79 LaGrave street, aged 77 years. Mrs. Steketee had been in poor health for eight years, but had been critically ill only since last Sunday, since which time she had failed rapidly.
Mrs. Steketee was one of the best known women in the city. She was born in Hermann, N.Y., and came here as a bride from Vermont 48 years ago, her husband being then established in business in this city. He brought his bride directly to Grand Rapids, and she at once took her place among the social leaders of the city. Throughout her long life, until the recent years of her infirmities. Mrs. Steketee was prominent in the religious and social work of the Fountain Street Baptist church, in the Ladies Literary society, and the Alsbee club. She was an able woman, with the ability to lead and in her younger years was a force in Grand Rapids society. In recent years she had spent her summers in her cottage at Macatawa Park and her winters in the city.
Mrs. Steketee is the second of her family to be taken by death, her step-daughter, Mrs. Reke Steketee Parmenter preceding her by three years. She leaves her husband, George G. Steketee, and the following children: Mrs. Mary L. Dayton of Rhinelander, Wis., who with her husband R.C. Dayton, arrived in the city Thursday; Albert G., John G., George G., Jr. and Leander W., all of Grand Rapids; also a brother Nathan Kendall, of Holland, and two sisters, Mrs. Eunice Smith of Berwin, Ill., and Mrs. C.W. Holmes, of Bravo, Mich. Of the children only Leander and George W., Jr. were Mrs. Steketee's children, the others being children by Mr. Steketee’s first wife, but all regarded her with deepest devotion.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the resident. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
