Obituary of Mrs. Cornelia Ten Haaf
(From the Grandville Ave. Record, December 22, 1911 – Pg. 3)

In the death of Mrs. Cornelia Ten Haaf, 353 Grandville Avenue, which occurred last week, this community loses an old and respected pioneer resident. She lived to the ripe old age of 80 and has seen Grand Rapids, and this district, grow from what was in the early days called woods.

Mr. and Mrs. Ten Haaf were married in the Netherlands. Two years after they sailed for America. Mr. Ten Haaf tried a sailor’s life on Lake Michigan, but it was too great a strain and he gave it up.

They first lived in Allegan county. Later on moved to Ottawa county, taking up farm life near Holland.

In the fire of ’71, they lost all they had, but by perseverance they succeeded in again starting life. Thirty years ago they came to Grand Rapids, since which time Mr. Ten Haaf has been engaged in the real estate business. They owned many lots in the Ten Haaf addition which was named after them. They lived there seventeen years: nine years at 373 Grandville avenue. Besides her husband, Mrs. Ten Haaf leaves four children, Mrs. J. Formsma, Miss Martha Ten Haaf and P. A. Ten Haaf of this city, and Mrs. George Talsma of Kalamazoo.

Funeral services were held Monday at the house at 1:15 and at Fifth Avenue Christian Reformed church at 2 o’clock.
