DEATH OF ANOTHER PIONEER

By the death of Berend Zevalkink at his home 747 Grandville Avenue on last Saturday morning, removes another old pioneer well known for a number of years as a grocer at 749 on the Avenue.

The deceased born in Rurlo, Netherlands in 1843, making his age at the time of his death, 75 years. He came to Grand Rapids when this section was very new. He located on Grandville Avenue in the home where he died.

He was a tailor by trade, but finding the work not congenial left that occupation and started in the grocery business at 749 over thirty years ago.

He was the father of 12 children. He leaves beside his widow, two daughter-Mrs. Joseph VanderMeer of Burlingame and Mrs. J. Verlee of Zeeland, and five sons-James J., E. J. and Benjamin living here, and Richard of Vermillion, SD, and Garrett who is serving in the cavalry in France.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, from Grace Reformed church of which he was a member, Rev. C. Spaan officiating. His four sons and two sons of his brother were pall bearers at his request. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.

The family takes this opportunity to express their thanks and appreciation for kindness and sympathy in this their time of sorrow.
