The Woman’s Benefit Association of the Maccabees

(Grandville Avenue Record)

The state of Michigan is noted for its many leading resources and developments, among which it leads in production is copper, salt and many other things from the agriculture, horticulture, manufacturing industries and soil, but of all these, there is one thing in which we excel, that as a body of people of a state we should feel proud of, that is, fraternalism and one organization that has attained a world-wide reputation is the Woman’s Benefit Association of the Maccabees, originated and founded by Miss Bina M. West at Port Huron, Michigan, in 1892, together with a few loyal followers the new organization was launched and on December 31st, the same year the new organization had a membership of 174 members. Within two years, due to her own work, sixteen states had established the Order.

The reason for the orders was the protection for women and their homes. Her plan was to give a woman a chance to show what she could do and eventually field workers were trained to carry on the cork and develop their capabilities. After 24 years of Miss West’s efforts, the membership stands at 187,494. Over $13,000,000 in benefits to the homes in the United States and Canada have been signed over and over 807 patients have received free hospital care during the past year. Miss Bina M. West is the Supreme Commander of the Woman’s Benefit Association of the Maccabees.

Girls in Michigan should be taught the advantage of securing protection in a Woman’s Order. The younger they join the lower the rate. It is non-sectarian and includes women of many nations.

The association is now erecting a building for its own use in Port Huron, Michigan at a cost of over $250,000. This will be the home of the Order, the only one of its kind in the world.
