Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School- 1875
by J. Pulte
The student census list for Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School in 1875 is not in the school journal. The year of 1875 a teacher was hired, J.A. Barnes, for the winter term from November 2, 1874 through March 1, 1875 and the summer term from April 26 through August 1, 1875. Barnes was also hired for the next winter term from October 4, 1875 through September 1, 1876. There are financial records that show J. A. Barnes was paid for his teaching duties during the 1875 school terms. The winter financial report shows a payment to $22.50 to William White for wood Feb. 26th, 1876. The teacher contract for Mr. J.A. Barnes also has a note in the margin which says, "The conditions of this contract are that it shall be rendered null and void at any time by the demand of either party, or the mutual consent of the both." The next school director, T.C. Stinson, was elected September 5th in 1874 at the school board meeting. The next minutes recorded for the school board were on September 4th, 1876 and are recorded on the same page as the minutes from the 1874 meeting. The condition of the school journal itself is very fragile. The binding is cracked and there may be pages missing, and evidence that every available space was utilized for the school records which had some school censuses recorded in between others. Yet the school census for 1875 was not in the journal when it was received by the White family. Did that page get taken out? Was it never recorded? Were the differences over the school board so hot that there was no meeting called? We will never know. I can only continue on with the next years school census lists. Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School- 1876 Transcribed by J. Pulte The next school board meeting was held in "Tyrone, Sept. 4th, 1876" by the "legal voters of District No. one of Tyrone & Casnovia" at the "school house at 6 PM". They elected as assessor William H. Twiss "the choice of the people", and voted for four months school in the winter with a male teacher and four months in the summer with a female teacher, and then approved that Uriah Chubb provide fifteen cords of wood at 85 cents per cord for the school; then adjourned.E. W. Wittman was hired as the male teacher and Mary V. Sage as the female teacher. The director for Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School, T.C. Stinson, made his student list in the same family grouping style. Spelling of names is again varied from previous years, but is more consistent with today’s spelling in most cases. |
