Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School- 1877

The 1877 school census for Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School was recorded by family grouping of last names rather than alphabetically by last name. The handwriting is obviously not Mr. Stinson’s the director for 1877, and it is beautifully legible. The spelling of the student’s names also is the best in the journal. T.C. Stinson has signed the top of the page and entered the date, but another person wrote the list.

Mr. Stinson also retired from his service as school director at the school board meeting on Sept. 3, 1877 as well. Mr. Edgar B. Chase, my great, great Uncle, was elected to the position that night. Edgar Chase had beautiful handwriting, but it doesn’t match the hand that wrote the 1877 student list.

The teachers that year were Wm. M. Smith, for the winter term, and Mary V. Sage, for the summer term. I am not a handwriting expert, but when the two signed their names on their teacher contracts they wrote capital m’s and the matching example to the student list looks like Miss Mary Sage’s handwriting. Miss Sage was a former student and member of the community as well. Her name is on the student list for 1870.

A curious thing happened in comparing the 1876 student list with the 1877. There was a change in the ages of the David twins Ella and Eva. Their ages in the 1876 list are as 6, but the 1877 list says their ages are 5; and in 1878 they are listed as 8 years old. All of the other student ages on the 1877 list progress correctly except these two.
