Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School- 1879
Transcribed by J. Pulte
The school year 1879-1880 was a very volital year for the area. The growing size of the student school population and the geographical student draw area staddling Casnovia Township in Muskegon County and Tyrone Township in Kent County led to spirited debate and many school board meetings. The annual meeting of "the legal voters of said district No. 1 Frac. Of Tyrone and Casnovia met on Sept. 1st, 1879 and they voted to meet two weeks later . The next meeting on Sept. 15th, 1879 met at the school house a seven o’clock and they amended the school year from five months to nine months. They met again on Oct. 1st, 1879 as a "Special meeting was called by the legal voters of the School District No. 1 Frac. Of Tyrone and Casnovia." A motion to build on the school house was made and lost and another committee of five was appointed "for the purpose of taking into consideration the expense and size of a new school house. M.L. Squires, E.B. Chase, A Hanners, A. Norris, and D. Gilmore were to report back on Oct. 7th, 1879. At the Oct. 7th meeting the report was heard and the motion was made to repair the present school house by making it two stories high was lost and the motion to build a new school house for two to three thousand dollars was made and lost as well. The meeting was then adjourned. They met again in Dec. 30th, 1879 to move that the school site be relocated. The motions were made and lost 8 for and 25 against. On Jan. 1880 another special school board meeting was held by the "legal voters" and a petition was read to debate and vote on changing the school site the motion lost, but finally on Feb. 9th, 1880 another special meeting was held and another petition was read to change the school site. "The petition was read for the purpose of changing the school house site from where it now is to one acre of land described as follows commencing twelve rods west of the south west corners of Probasco’s addition to the village of Casnovia, all on section (24) twenty-four. Mr. Jackson called for the yeahs and nays, moved to vote open. The call result of votes (23) yeas and (1) nay. The final meeting was held May 6th, 1880 for the purpose of accepting or rejecting the school house site approval of the School Inspectors of said townships. The vote was taken and accepted. In 1879 Herbert Everett and Anna Leacy were the teachers. Miss Anna Leacy was my great, great Uncle George White’s first and favorite teacher in 1879, and we have her picture in the White family photo album. The family story goes that she became ill and was unable to continue teaching. The financial records for the district show that Miss Leacy signed two teaching contracts for both 1878 and 1879 and was paid for both. The marriage index for Kent County shows that she married John Warren between 1883 and 1886. |
