EVENT AND COMMENT November 13, 1912, an assembly was held at which Mr. Philo C. Fuller, a former graduate of this school, spoke briefly on "Yale Spirit." He also mentioned the fact that, thru the efforts of the Yale men in the city, students wishing to enter Yale could now take their entrance examinations in this city. November 20, 1912, following two very delightful numbers by the orchestra, Mr. Norman Hackett greeted us and then introduced Prof. Stuart of Princeton, the author of Mr. Hackett's new play, "The Deceiver." He hopes to establish one at Princeton, and teach the drama by actual presentation. Mrs. Billman, of Powers' Theatre, has very kindly promised to the school the Mantell posters, signed by Mr. Mantell himself. Prof. E. A. Strong, formerly principal of this high school, has given us a very fine photograph of the moon. This a copy of an actual photograph taken at the Yerkes Observatory. On Friday, November 22, several of the girls in the freshman class were entertained in the lunch room by the members of the "Girls' Literary Society" and the "College Club." Refreshments were served, after which a short musical program was given, and games were played. Monday, November 25, the orchestra entertained the pupil and teachers of the school, together with parents and friends, with a very delightful concert. "Everybody's doing it. Doing what?" Talking about that Muskegon game. |
ALUMNI DEPARTMENT Mr. Joe Davis, who graduated from Central High School twenty-one years ago and who is now a successful New York lawyer, has been visiting his parents in this city while on a trip from California to New York in the interests of his firm. While in Grand Rapids he visited the high school and showed great interest in our new building and our work. A club has been organized by the alumnae of the K.E.E., and two meetings have been held at the homes of members. The membership is about twelve, which includes practically all of the K.E.E. Alumnae who are in the city at present. Miss Margaret Fisher, '06, is teaching in the eighth grade, and Miss Ethel Sharrow, '08, in the domestic science department of the Junior High School. Miss Cina Holben, '11, was married on Nov. 23 to Mr. Peter J. Hendricks of this city. Miss Marguerite Benjamin, '12 and Miss Helen Fowle, '11, were elected president and vice-president of the junior students at the Grand Rapids Kindergarten Training School. After spending his summer on two different ranches in Washington, Fred Hall, '12, is now in Portland, Oregon, with the Raymond Concrete Tile Co. He sends this message to his friends in Central High: "Boys, I'm working at the bottom of the ladder, where everybody has to begin, but I'm going to get to the top some day." |
