Christian Science Society

In the year 1915 a Christian Scientist, who was a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and registered practitioner, opened offices on Main street in the village for the practice of Christian Science healing. There were no Christian Scientists here at that time and four years later, in January 1919, when church services were begun, the work carried on by this practitioner and one or two others who pledged themselves to the study of the Bible and the text book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, and support of the cause in Lowell.

In July 1919, quarters in which to hold public church services were taken over the Lowell State bank on East Main street, and an organization formed. At this time there were a number of earnest, loyal students present, two of whom were members of the Mother Church. The latter were elected First and Second Readers, in accordance with the manual of the Mother Church, under which all the work of the movement in Lowell has been carried on to the fullest degree possible with the material at hand.

The Lowell Public Library received in 1919 the complete works of Mary Baker Eddy and in 1931 Dr. Powell’s book "Mary Baker Eddy—A Life Size Portrait." All were gifts from the Board of Trustees, under the will of Mary Baker Eddy.
