Lowell Lodge, No. 90, F. & A.M.

The lodge held its first communication April 8, 1856, under Dispensation. Simon Pettit was instrumental in bringing about this organization, and himself traveled to Kalamazoo with a petition asking for a Dispensation to work which was granted and he brought it back with him.

The first officers under the dispensation were Wm. H. Dickinson, worshipful master; Cyprian S. Hooker, senior warder; Thomas Daniels, junior warden; Jos. B. Shear, secretary. Other members at the time were J.S. Hooker, Simon Pettit, E. Dunning, A. R. Hoag, B. Hoag, O. J. Odell, Jno. B. Pratt, and Charles Shumway, M.D.

The lodge occupied what was then known as Franklin Hall, which was situated next to the old "checkered front" which was nearly opposite of the present quarters of the lodge in the Reed block, formerly known as Music Hall. About the year 1882 the lodge moved to the third floor of the A.J. Howk building which it occupied until 1889, when it moved to its pressent home.

The names of the first members initiated into the lodge would probably be of interest to many, and are here given. In 1856 while under dispensation they were, John S. Hooker, the first, and following him were Arvine Peck, E. D. Parker, B. G. Wilson, L. R. Brown and Jacob Chapman.

A Charter was granted the lodge January 16, 1857, and was given the name of Lowell Lodge No. 90, and the records show the following taken into the lodge that year: E.R. Craw, R. L. Cole, R. M. Goodsell M.D., B. M. Winegar, Isaac White, W. H. Pratt, H.H. Powers, and Jacob Snell, and, so, from this beginning No. 90 has continued to prosper and grow until it reached its maximum in 1930 with a membership of 233.

The following are the Past Worshipful Masters in their order and the years in which they served.

The oldest member of the lodge of Simon Pettit, whom at the time of his death in 1925, was 96 years of age, and had been a Mason of 70 years.

For many years Lowell Lodge No. 90 enjoyed the distinction of being the most perfect in the ritualistic work of any lodge in the State, regardless of size or location. The membership had always been kept at a high standard, and with few exceptions it will be found that always our best, and most prominent men in Lowell and vicinity are members of Lowell Lodge No. 90 F. & A.M.
