Grange Histories of Rockford
No. 751 Algoma Grange No. 751 was organized on February 22, 1899, with Marcus L. Norton, Worthy Master and Percy D. Weston, Worthy Secretary. The following members: fifty-seven in number, were charter members: George Berg, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Baldwin, Grant Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Morris C. Bowler, Edward Brownell, Wallie Coleman, Nettie Coleman, Laffey Cristy, Ada Fuller, Charles Fuller, Frank George, William Hull, Mr. and Mrs. John Jewell, Roy Lemp, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Mosher, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Montgomery, Dwight Morningstar, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Norton, John Norton, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Norton, Bert Putnam, Jesse Putman, R. G. Stanard, H. A. Sprik, Wm. Smith, Phoebe Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Simmons, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Teesdale, Freeman Teesdale, Maurice Teesdale, Art Whittall, Bessie Whittall, Emma Whittall, Clyde Whittall, Oscar Wolven, Fannie Wolven, Gardner Wolven, Percy D. The present officers, 1939, are Worthy Master, Abe DeWilde, and Worthy Secretary, Reta Norman. The first meeting was called to be held the evening of the 9th of January 1875 at the Hall of Courtland Center. A very cold night and considerable snow and the roads many of them impassible. It was decided that it would adjourn and meet again January 20th to give all prospective charter members an opportunity to be present at the organization. Tefft, Thomas Haffey, Lucy Haffey, John Bellows, Mrs. John Bellows, William Meyers, Mrs. William Meyers, John Peterson, Mrs. John Peterson, Frank Saunders, Alzoa Austin, Mortimer Austin, Lorimer Austin. Officers Elected: Worthy Master, Orren Tefft, Overseer, Harmon Burch, Secretary, Nelson Graham; Treasurer, Fred Stegman. The following spring the meetings were held in a house on the Mortimer Dean farm. Plans were made for the building of the present home of the grange. The site for the Hall was donated by the Austin family. The Tefft family donated the trees for the foundation sills. The present officers, 1939, are Worthy Master, Geo. DeBoer; Worthy Secretary, Maxine Crandell. Silver Lake Grange No. 723 was organized March 3, 1897 with the following charter members: Mr. and Mrs. John G. Berry, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bellows, June Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Brown, Julia Bellows, Minnie Berry, Mr. and Mrs. Elzy Davis, Clayton Davies, George Farrell, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Farr, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Garwood, Lena Hartman, Lottie Johnson, Flora Johnson, Millie Johnson, George Kutts, Walter Kutts, Monroe Ladner, Grant Ladner, Bessie M. Lytle, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Pennington, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Provin, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Ray, L. G. Ray, Mr. and Mrs. Platt Rowland, Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Sowerby, Earl Sowerby, William Sowerby, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Spring, Ed. Spencer, Flora Tuttle, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Weller, Vera Weller, Mr. and Mrs. Myrza Weller, Effie Weller, Clifton Weller, Judson Weller, Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Weller, Cleo Weller, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Weller Sr., Maude Willett, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Young. The first meeting was called for February 23, 1897 by Jason Woodman, who was then State Lecturer. There were twenty-seven present. Ballot was cast for Worthy Master and Worthy Secretary. The ballot resulted in the election of John G. Berry for Worthy Master, and Lyman G. Ray for Worthy Secretary. At this time a motion was made and carried that the meeting be adjourned until the evening of Wednesday, March 3, 1897, at which time thirty-five more names were added as charter members and the remaining officers elected.
