Restoration of Alpine Center Cemetery
The little cemetery located beside the Alpine Township hall at Walker and Seven Mile Roads, has not been cared for properly for many years. The markers are piled in heaps, the weeds and tall grass have spoiled this spot where early settlers were laid to rest. The gray marker of Colonel Edward Wheeler and his wife, Abijah (Warner), still stands. They came to Alpine in 1844, one of the earliest of the settlers who gave the land from their farm as a burying ground. They were both of Rutland, VT. Colonel Wheeler was a member of the 44th U. S. Infantry in the War of 1812. Possibly the earliest grave was for Bela Chase who died in March, 1859. Supervisor Charles Momber reports that the stones will be restored to their proper places and green grass will cover the once wild growth covering this burial spot. Weed killers were tried first to clear the undergrowth without success. Finally, it was decided to have a bulldozer on the grounds to uproot the shrubs and vines. The tombstones were moved and placed in piles. The ground was thoroughly combed to extract the wild growth. The ground has been sewn with grass seed and barley. There is an old, faded plat of the cemetery to determine where each stone should be replaced. Ernest Albert, a former supervisor of Alpine Township had suggested at one time that the graves be moved to Pine Grove Cemetery where they would be better cared for but nothing came of that. |
