Calvin W. Winchester was born in Chester, Geauga County, Ohio 20 Jun 1837, the son of Layden and Clarissa (Campbell) Winchester. His father, Layden Winchester was born in Connecticut in 1798.

When Mr. Winchester was seventeen his father purchased 80 acres of land in section 10 to which 50 more was added later.

He married Cleona Terrell in Dorr, Michigan 31 Jul 1859, daughter of Alonzo P. and Caroline M. (Blakeslee) Terrell. She was born in Ridgeville, Warren County, Ohio, 29 May 1844 They had five children born in Byron: Osro L., 7 May 1860, Dora A., 30 Aug 1866, Inis A., 30 Jul 1868, Roye A., 13 Apr 1878 and Lera C., 19 Sep 1880. He held the office of magistrate. He was a Greenbacker. His wife and two daughters were members of the Christian Church.
