1842 - RECORDS OF THE TOWNSHIP OF COURTLAND

Statement of votes given in the Township of Cortland in the County of Kent and State of Michigan at the annual township meeting held on the fourth day of April, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and forty-two -
For the following officers viz - one supervisor, one township clerk, one township treasurer, two assessors, three highway commissioners, three school inspectors, three justices of the peace, two directors of the poor and two constables.

OFFICE OF SUPERVISOR - the whole number of votes given was eighteen and they were given for the following persons, viz, 12 votes for Isaac Tower, 4 votes for Philo Beers, 1 vote for David Hayns, and 1 vote for Sabin Johnson.
OFFICE OF TOWNSHIP CLERK - the whole number of votes given was twenty and they were given for the following persons, viz, 13 for William Thornton, and 7 for Philo Austin.
OFFICE OF TOWNSHIP TREASURER - the whole number of votes given was seventeen and they were given for the following persons, viz, 13 for Thomas Addison, 3 for Seth Lockwood, and 1 for Barton Johnson.
OFFICE OF ASSESSORS - the whole number of votes given was thirty-seven and they were given for the following persons, viz, 12 for Alexander Dun, 12 for Rice Austin, 6 for Anson Ensign, 1 for David Hayns, 1 for Thomas Addison, 1 for William Thornton, and 2 for Iram Barns.
OFFICE OF COMMISSIONERS OF HIGHWAY - the whole number of votes given was fifty-three and they were given for the following persons, viz, 18 for John Darrow, 13 for William R. Davis, 11 for Thomas Addison, 3 for Stephen Tower, 2 for Dix Lockwood, 3 for Iram Barns, 1 for Anson Ensign, 1 for Barton John, and 1 for John Austin.
OFFICE OF SCHOOL INSPECTORS - - the whole number of votes given was fifty-four and they were given for the following persons, viz, 17 for John Austin (for constitutional term), 5 for Stephen S. Tower (for 3 years), 11 for Stephen Tower (in place of Frederick Tuttle), 10 for Barton Johnson (in place of Lauren Austin, 2 for Anson Ensign (for one year), 2 for Thomas Addison (for two years), 1 for Barton Johnson (in place of f. Tuttle, 1 for Thomas Addison (for 1 year), 1 for John Austin, and 1 for Barton Johnson.
OFFICE OF CONSTABLES - - the whole number of votes given was thirty-five and they were given for the following persons, viz, 1 for Barton Johnson, 1 for Benjamin Botsford, 3 for Frederick Tuttle, 5 for Dix Lockwood, 5 for William R. Davis, 5 for Philo Austin, 10 for Winslow Tower, and 5 for Anson Ensign.
OFFICE OF DIRECTORS OF THE POOR - - the whole number of votes given was 37 and they were given for the following persons, viz, 12 for Sabin Johnson, 1 for Benjamin Botsford, 5 for William R. Davis, 7 for Philo Beers, 2 for Rice Austin, 2 for Seth Lockwood, and 1 for Sabin Johnson.

Voted at the aforesaid meeting to elect Pathmasters and other officers by the uplifted hand, the following officers were elected viz for Pound Master, David Hayns.

For Constable - Winslow Tower
For Directors of the Poor - (Decided by lot) - Sabin Johnson and Philo Beers

SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 1842 the Courtland Township Board met at the schoolhouse in School District #1 agreeable to notice -
Present - William Thornton, Isaac Tower, John Austin and Philo Beers
Adjourned to Saturday, the 25th inst. at 9 o'clock a.m. at this place.
