George H. Detlor Page 504 - George H. Detlor, one of the representative insurance and real estate dealers of Grand Rapids, was born in Ontario, Canada, March 17, l868, the son of Barnet V. and Isabella (Benn) Detlor, both of whom were natives of Canada, and came to Michigan in 1888, settling on a farm in Kent county, where they afterward resided until death. George H. Detlor was one of eleven children born to his parents. He received a common and high school education, after which he worked on the home farm until 1888. In that year he engaged in the lumber business in partnership with Luther Wilson. He later engaged in the insurance business, his first two years being spent with the Mystic Circle and the next four with the Modern Woodmen of America. After severing relations with the latter order he became general field manager in Ohio for the Home Guards of America, remaining in that position for fourteen years. In 1906 he returned to Grand Rapids, where his first six years in the insurance business had been spent, and embarked in the insurance business for himself. In 1912 he added real estate to his already large business and in both fields of activity he has achieved notable success. For eleven years he was located in the Michigan Trust building and then moved to his present suite of offices on Division avenue. In addition to his insurance and real estate business, he is secretary and treasurer of the Grand Rapids Dairy Supply Company, secretary and treasurer of the Michigan Home Builders' Association and ex-president of the Grand Rapids Real Estate Board. His is an Elk, an Odd Fellow, A Knight of Pythias and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the American Insurance Union, and is prominent in both business and social circles. Mr. Detlor was married in 1898 to Margaret B. Hine, of Akron, Ohio, and they became the parents of one son, George I. Detlor, who was born July 6, 1902, and who is a graduate of the University of Michigan and is now identified with A. E. Kusterer & Company, investment bankers and brokers, of Grand Rapids. This wife died April 8, 1915, and in November, 1919, Mr. Detlor married Jane Weaver of Grand Rapids.
