Michigan Territory/State has been part of the US Censuses since 1820, but Lapeer County was not included until the 1840 US Census. If the 1830 US Census was taken before the Fall of 1830, the population of Lapeer County would have been just James DENEEN and his family. The Territory and State of Michigan also conducted several censuses.

1840 US Census The US Census of 1840 for Lapeer County was recorded by Noah H. HART. The total population of the county was 3,364, primarily in the southern part. (This is not including Atlas and Davison Townships, which were included in Lapeer County in the 1840 Census, but became part of Genesee County in 1843.)
It is interesting that almost half (1595, or 47.4%) of the population was female. Pioneering communities were often mostly male. The early settlers of Lapeer County didn't consider themselves adventurers, outside of civilization. They were setting up a community of farmers and merchants, and many were as well-educated and civilized as their former neighbors in the East.
