Early History The city of Lapeer, which lies mostly in Lapeer Township, is the county seat and largest city in Lapeer County. When Lapeer Township was first organized on 30 Dec 1834, it encompassed most of lapeer County. By the time the county and townships took their final form in 1869, Lapeer Township only contained the 36-square-mile block, T7N-R10E. So the nomenclature can be confusing. Land speculators began buying property in T7N-R10E, Sections 4 and 5, from the government in the Fall of 1830. The first white settlers in T7N-R10E came in 1831. Brothers Alvin N. HART and Oliver B. HART, along with J. B. MORSE, came from Utica, NY in the Summer of 1831, to look for suitable land to purchase and settle. In Nov 1831, Alvin N. HART and his family, accompanied by Mr. J. M. PALMER, settled and cut a road from Lapeer to Whittemore Plains, in Oakland County. Then in Dec 1831, J. R. WHITE brought his family from NY. That winter, Dr. Minor Y. TURRILL came with his wife, and his aged parents. In Mar 1832, Oliver B. HART, brother of Alvin, and in May 1832, J. B. MORSE. Also about May 1832, Alvin MCMASTER and his wife. These first families were soon followed by some of their close relatives. The mother and siblings of J. R. WHITE, the sisters of Dr. TURRILL and their families, and the ROOD families. Earliest Land Entries in T7N-R10E: 16 Sep 1830, Daniel LEROY, Section 5 11 Jul 1831, Oliver B. HART, Section 4 4 Jan 1832, George F. BALL, Section 4 25 Jan 1833, Jonathan R. WHITE, Section 8 3 Mar 1834, Enoch J. WHITE, Section 8 9 Jan 1835, James DIXON, Section 2 | ||
