My name is William Haloupek, and I took over as coordinator of this site on 16 Nov 2019. I have been dabbling in genealogy since I retired in 2011. Since then, I have corresponded with hundreds of genealogists, from amateur to professional. I greatly value my many contacts and friendships that I have made along the way. Feel free to drop me an email, if only to let me know which things on the site you found useful or interesting. If you find any mistakes or omissions, I would be grateful for the information. If you have any old photos or documents that might be of interest, I would love to see them. I'm a retired mathematician. After six years as Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, I moved to New Jersey and worked for Lockheed Martin seven years, and then went to Massachusetts and worked for Raytheon for three years. Then I had a quadruple bypass in 2011, at age 55, and I've been retired since then. Besides Lapeer County, I was coordinator for Benton County, MN, and Tama and Powesheik Counties in IA, and was state coordinator for IAGenWeb in 2014/5. Now I only have this Lapeer County site, besides my personal websites. Since I was adopted at birth, I have two ancestries to research. My adoptive parents' ancestors were all within 10 miles of Belle Plaine, IA in 1900, and they were all in Bohemia, Germany and Poland in 1850. Surnames were CHALOUPEK (which became HALOUPEK or KALOUPEK in America), POSEKANY, SEVCIK and KRUEGER. I haven't worked on this for a few years, but my research is archived on Bill's Genealogy with overflow on Haloupeks and Posekanys and Military Profiles in My Family Tree. My biological ancestors have a much different story. Many of them came to America in early colonial times. They came from northwestern Europe, especially England, Scotland and Germany. My birth name is Gary Lee GAPINSKI, and one of my g-grandparents was from Poland.
My (biological) ggg-grandparents, Enoch HUNTLEY and Betsey BURGESS, came to Macomb County, MI from Bastard, Leeds, Ontario between 1814 and 1820. They moved to Lapeer County between 1842 and 1850. Enoch's brother, Benjamin HUNTLEY, came to Lapeer County in the mid 1830s. Some of their cousins also ended up in Michigan. The HUNTLEYs originally came from Lyme, CT where they had lived for several generations. Several other BURGESSes lived in Macomb County in 1820-5, but I have not yet established a connection. Another pair of ggg-grandparents, Horace BARTLETT and Sally WOODWORTH, came from Whitby, Ontario to Dryden, Lapeer County in 1840. Their daughter, Sinthia BARTLETT, married Erwin HUNTLEY, son of Enoch and Betsey. I have pages for these ancestors, and many others, on my personal website, Gapinski Ancestry. I also have a brief article on genealogical terminology, if you need to brush up on 3rd cousins twice removed, 4th great-granduncles, etc. |
