Manitou County was organized in 1855. In 1861 the county government was disorganized and Manitou was attached to Mackinac. In 1865 it was attached to Leelanau, then again attached to Mackinac in 1869. In 1895 Manitou was abolished and absorbed by Charlevoix and Leelanau counties.
