Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle January 1, 2005 GRAYLING - Sally Lou Grant Alstott, 71, of Grayling, formerly of Bay City, died on Dec. 29, 2004, at her home in Lovells on the North Branch of the AuSable River. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Jan. 27, 1933, the daughter of the late Lewis A. and Lucy P. (Boersig) Grant. She moved to Bay City at age four and had resided there most of her life until returning to her river home north of Grayling in 1987. Sally loved her life in the north woods, enjoying the beautiful scenery, eagles soaring overhead and the river constantly flowing by. She fed rare birds, deer and an occasional foraging bear. Sally graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1951, and attended Bay City Junior College. She then worked as a copy writer, on air announcer and gal Friday for Michigan's second oldest commercial broadcast radio station, WBCM in Bay City during the 1950s and early '60s. Women were unique in broadcasting in those days and she enjoyed every minute of it. Sally married Daniel Logan Alstott in 1958 and retired from radio to become what she called a "Household Engineer." She is survived by her husband, Daniel; her daughter, Julie Grant (Alstott) Van Hove (Charles III) of Grosse Pointe Farms; and her grandson, Daniel Joseph Van Hove, also of Grosse Pointe Farms. She is also survived by her little dog, Samantha. She was a fine wife and a wonderful mother. She treasured her friends and kept in close contact with many of them through the years. She never forgot the songs and summer fun at Camp Maqua, where many of those friendships began. Cremation has taken place according to Sally's wishes. A "Farewell to Sally" is scheduled alongside the North Branch in the summer of 2005. No other services are contemplated. Those wishing to contribute to Sally's memory and on her behalf are asked to consider Hospice of Michigan at Gaylord earmarked for Sally Alstott and addressed to Nelson Funeral Home, PO Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734. Through her years of illness with cancer, Sally arrived at one strong conclusion, namely that "GETTING OLD AIN'T FOR SISSIES."
