Traverse City Record-Eagle Harry K. Babcock Died March 7, 2005 NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Harry K. Babcock, 77, of New Albany, Ind., died Monday, March 7, 2005, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. He was the retired president of Steepleton Billiard Table Company, a charter member of the Babcock, Bade and Sullivan environmental group, and a retired captain of the St. Matthews Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Clara Babcock; two sons, Whitney W. Babcock and Squire K. Babcock; a daughter, Meme Babcock Smith of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren, Sabrah Babcock Wilkerson, Bekah Babcock, Betts Babcock Kayser, Aba Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Hannah Babcock, Chip Westerman, Molly Westerman, Lou Ann Crouch, Lisa Chapman Newlin and David Chapman; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Babcock, Grace Kayser and Jonah Wilkerson. Visitation will take place Wednesday, March 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, in Louisville, Ky. A memorial service will be held at a later date. BAHR, 81, of Manistee, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Marilla Church of the Brethren, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service. Traverse City Record-Eagle January 29, 2005 MANISTEE - Dale Byron Bahr, 81, of Manistee, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. He was born March 25, 1923, in Manistee County's Marilla Township, the son of the late James S. and Nina E. (Winters) Bahr. A graduate of Kaleva High School, class of l942, he served with the United States Army in Alaska during World War II. Preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel (Bradford) Bahr, Dale married Mildred (Lutz) Mackey on June 28, 1958, at the Marilla Church of the Brethren. He was employed at Packaging Corporation of America for 32 years, retiring in l986. Dale was a member of the Marilla Church of the Brethren, the Marilla Historical Society and the American Legion Post #531 of Copemish, who recently honored him for his 50 years of membership. Dale enjoyed gardening and taking care of the birds. A part-time comedian and inventor, he especially loved his kids and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Mildred B. Bahr of Manistee; children and their spouses, John (Vicki) Mackey, James (Barbara) Mackey and Robert (Deborah) Mackey, all of Bear Lake, Dennis (Diane) Mackey of Kaleva, Jean (Bahr) Peterson of Kingsley, Lawrence (Juanita) Bahr of Theodore, Ala., Donald Bahr of Manistee, Janice (Bahr) and Ronald Long of Traverse City, Barbara (Mackey) and David Smoot of Frankfort, and David Bahr of Fremont, Ind.; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Goldie Budnik of Whitehall and Carol Harrigan of Traverse City. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also survive. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Marjorie Larabee, Lola Benoit, Millie Repo and Dora Landis; and one brother, Neal Bahr. Memorial services for Dale B. Bahr will be held today, Jan. 29, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Marilla Church of the Brethren, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Joe Wave will officiate. A luncheon will follow at the Marilla Historical Society. Cremation, final interment, and military graveside services will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle February 9, 2005 ADRIAN - Betty Lou Ball, 90, of Adrian, passed away Feb. 8, 2005, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 4, 1914, in Delta, Ohio, the daughter of Rollo and Mable (Evans) Hoyt. Betty graduated from Scott High School in Toledo, and continued her education at Davis College to earn her business degree. On Dec. 24, 1933, she married Kenneth Ball in Delta, Ohio. He preceded her in death March 1, 1989. Betty and her husband were instrumental in starting Croswell School, a private school for the mentally disabled. She had unending devotion to her two sons. Betty was a member of Adrian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1939. She will always be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Surviving Betty are her children, Nancy Dew of Tecumseh, Richard A. Ball of Adrian, Ruth (John) Bay of Traverse City and Joanna (Earl) McKinney of Adrian; ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Kenneth, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, John; one sister, Mary; and son-in-law, C.M. Dew. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at 3 p.m., at the Braun Everiss Wagley Funeral Home. A memorial service for Betty will follow at 3:30 p.m., with long-time friend, Kenneth Pulcifer officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Port Orange, Fla., at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 15. Later this spring, Margaret will be remembered at a memorial service at The People's Church in Kalkaska. Interment will follow in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle February 16, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Dee Wesley Barshney was born in Prattville on Oct. 28, 1917, and died on Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, after a year-long battle against cancer. Dee was raised in Pittsford and graduated from Jonesville High School in 1935. He received his bachelor's of science degree from Adrian College in 1939, and completed his master's degree in science from Michigan State University in the early 1950s. In both high school and college, Dee was active in three team sports, baseball, football and basketball. He started out his teaching and coaching career at Green County Consolidated High School in Marmaduke, Ark., where he met his future wife, Vadene. They married in 1940. After returning to Michigan, Dee began a long and illustrious coaching career in the Hudson school system. Besides coaching championship basketball and football teams at the junior high level, he taught science classes and served as principal at the same school for many years. He then moved on to Onsted, where he served as principal of that high school for 13 years. Dee finished his teaching career at the Pittsford school system after 10 years at the elementary level. Besides his long teaching career, Dee was an active member of several community organizations. In the early years, he served on the Board of Trustees at Adrian College. He also was president of the Alumni Association. He served on the Vocational Board in Hillsdale County. Dee was appointed to the governing board of Addison Community Hospital and served that board as president for 15 years. He was an active member of Kiwanis for 30 years. Besides working full time in a teaching career, Dee enjoyed farming as a full time hobby for half a century. He was a participating member of Farm Bureau during that time. Although Dee and his wife Vadene relocated to Traverse City, he remained a member of the Wheatland Congregational Church in Pittsford, where he served on the building committee and taught Sunday school. While living in northern Michigan, Dee and Vadene attended the First Baptist Church in Traverse City. In his spare time Dee enjoyed fishing. He loved his collection of vintage tractors and vehicles that he kept on his farm in Hudson. Dee spent many hours lovingly restoring his machinery and keeping the engines finely tuned. He is survived by nieces, nephews, and a cousin, Richard Barshney, now residing in Texas. His daughter, Deena, and wife, Vadene, reside in Traverse City, where Dee and Vadene lived for the past 17 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Ray and Daisy (Gaskill) Barshney, long-time residents of Hillsdale County in southern Michigan. Dee's brother, Doran Albert Barshney of Atlanta and his sister, Glee (Barshney) Bradish of Adrian, both preceded him in death also. The funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church on Washington Street in Traverse City on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at noon, with the Rev. Thomas Mansfield and the Rev. Clyde Wonders co-officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the First Baptist Church in Traverse City or the Wheatland Congregational Church in Pittsford. Nancy was a unique woman who exemplified amazing qualities. She was always full of energy, always doing, doing, doing. She gave to others in a loving and kind way regardless of the circumstances. Nancy was never met without a happy smile and a hug. Those closest to her will never forget her silly and fun, childlike way. Nancy was a woman with a faithful Christian spirit. Traverse City Record-Eagle January 9, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Steven Joseph Berak, 86, of Traverse City, formerly of Madison Heights, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Munson Hospice House. Born Dec. 7, 1918, in Czecho-Slovakia, Steve was the son of Joseph and Susanna (Novak) Berak. On Aug. 24, 1940, at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church in Detroit, he married Stella Strus. He worked at General Motors Fisher Body Plant 21 for 33 years. Steve surrounded himself with his family and taught them how to love. He blessed everyone with his time and vibrant spirit, and as a family we loved and honored him. A resident of Traverse City since 1975, Steve was an active member of Saint Francis Catholic Church, where he had previously served as an usher. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Steve loved music, played the accordion and had his own band. Throughout his life, Steve enjoyed spending time in the out-of-doors mushrooming, hunting, and fishing and ice fishing at home in his back yard on the Boardman Pond or at the family cottage in Metz. He especially loved gardening vegetables and looking after his fruit trees. Steve spent much time with his wife canning their harvest of fruits, fish, vegetables and homemade sauerkraut. He is survived by his loving wife, Stella; three daughters, Virginia Kuhr of Traverse City, Lorraine (Vern Oxender) Berak of Traverse City and Patty Berak of Center Line; four grandchildren, Suzanne Kuhr of Kalamazoo, Pamela (Ronald) Haag of Clarkston, Brian (Kim) Kuhr of Traverse City and Kristy (Eric) Daigh of Elk Rapids; five great-grandchildren, Michael, Isabel, Nicholes, Kelly and Harper; sister, Ann Skoda of Long Island, N.Y. and Dominican Sister Virginia Berak Mother House Oxford, Michigan. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle January 3, 2005 Gretel D. (Slack) Bernardini Died December 20, 2004 TRAVERSE CITY - Gretel D. (Slack) Bernardini, 88, died at the Arbor House in Traverse City Monday, Dec. 20, 2004. She was born April 17, 1916, the daughter of LeRoy and Allie Slack of Mesick. Gretel graduated from Mesick High School in 1933 and attended County Normal in Cadillac. She devoted her life to education and began her teaching career at the one-room Copley School in the northern part of Wexford Township. She later attended Western State Teachers College of Kalamazoo, where Gretel specialized in reading problems in children. Upon receiving her bachelor's degree in education, she taught at the Frankfort County Normal as critic teacher for several years. During summer vacations, Gretel attended the University of Michigan and received her master's degree. She worked with several schools in Michigan, setting up special programs for special students. She was also an associate professor at Central State University and Western State University of Gunnison, Colo. Gretel became well-known as a reading consultant and in 1961 she was asked by the United States Department of Education to help set up a curriculum for schools in Afghanistan. She did this, and subsequently provided the same needed service to Brazil. Gretel retired after 35 years of working in the various schools. The last five years were devoted to being a reading consultant for the Traverse City public school system. She is survived by her brother, Jerome (Margery) Slack of Traverse City; a step-daughter, Catherine Hoffman of North Carolina; two grand-nieces, Lesley Slack of Traverse City and Sundee McConnell of St. Louis, Mich.; and four grand-nephews, Jeffrey (Amy) Slack of Traverse City, Tom Slack of Florida, Patrick Slack of North Carolina and Christopher Slack of Cadillac; as well as several great-grand-nieces and nephews, and many friends. Gretel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and her son, Peter. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the First Congregational Church of Traverse City, with Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. Berry, 70, of Traverse City and formerly of Manistee, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Tendercare of Traverse City. He was born on Jan. 3, 1935, in Traverse City, the son of the late Willard J. and Ethel M. (Tompkins) Berry. He attended Elk Rapids High School. Frank worked for 24 years as a dock supervisor for the Sara Lee Corporation before retiring in 1993. His favorite pastime was collecting antiques. Frank is survived by his daughter, Franceine (Sims) Boggs of Mt. Morris; three grandchildren, Brooks, Danny and Kaitlin; a brother, Ken (Kay) Berry of Kingsley; and a sister, Mary Lou Belanger of Traverse City. "Jay" Billings, 64, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill. He was born March 31, 1940, in Boston, the son of the late Sumner and Sally (Bruce) Billings. Jay was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Navy. A member of the Benzie Masonic Lodge No. 444, F&AM for 10 years, he owned the Crystal Café in Benzonia and was co-owner J&R Investments. Jay leaves behind his beloved wife, CeCe (Fejedelem); brother, Bruce (Sabrina) of El Cajon, Calif.; sister, Susan Pappas of Woburn, Mass; special nieces and nephews, Lisa and Kevin Klein of Beaverton, and Jason and Stephania Fejedelem of Montrose; friend and companion, BJ; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Frederick Wayne Bishop Sr. Died June 1, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Frederick Wayne Bishop Sr., 89, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Highlander. From 1935 through 1937 Fred was employed by the National Bank of Hastings. From 1937 through 1980 he was employed by the Michigan Mutual Auto Insurance Company of Traverse City; he was secretary of the corporation from 1949 until 1963, when he became president. He retired from the company in 1980. He was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church, was president of the Traverse City Exchange Club and was a member of the State Association Governing Board until he was called into military service. He was secretary/treasurer of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club for seven years, served as president for one year, and served on the Board of Directors for nine years. Mr. Bishop served on several committees for the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce. He also served on several committees for Insurance Industry Trade groups, such as Conference of Mutual Casualty Insurance Companies, National Association of Independent Insurers and the Michigan Insurance Information Association. He also served one year each as vice president and president of the Michigan Association of Insurance Companies. Fred was president of the local Salvation Army Board, for two years served as treasurer of the local chapter of the American Red Cross and was a life member of the Elks Club. In April of 1943 he was inducted into the United States Army and was assigned to the 26th Port Company, training in Indiantown Gap, Pa., and Boston, Mass. His unit went overseas in late 1943 and worked several ports in Southern England, moving on to Antwerp Belgium in 1944. He left his unit in 1945 to attend Officers Training School in Fountainbleau, France, and was appointed 2nd lieutenant assigned to the first battalion of the 18th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Division. His battalion was assigned the Internal Security for the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. Frederick returned to the states in 1946. He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman, enjoying golf, basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, hunting and fishing. Born January 20, 1916, in Hastings, he was the son of Herbert and Lena (Geiger) Bishop. On June 5, 1938, in Hastings, he married LaVera B. Otis, who survives. (Lois) Bishop Jr. and Luana (Dale) Dueweke, all of Traverse City; sister, Hilda Zerbel of Hastings; grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Bishop, Jeanne (Steve) Johnson, Jennifer Bishop, Jill Bishop, Gretchen Dueweke, Erica Bishop, Megan (Rusty) Hayward and Joanna Dueweke; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Orlie, Lewis, Frederick and Richard; and sisters, Helen, Elvah, Louise and Margaret. He was born on Nov. 10, 1930, in Wilson Township to William L. and Pearl (Gardner) Blissett, who preceded him in death. On Sept. 22, 1956, he married Bonnie Kay Stuck, who survives him. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean Conflict and was awarded a commendation by the South Korean government. Russ worked in the Kalkaska area throughout his adult life, retiring from Homco in 1993. In retirement he enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors, using his skills as a machinist to make many of the parts. He was a member of the New Hope Community Church in Acme. On Aug. 6, 1937, in Bellaire, he married the former Charlotte Johnston, who died in 1995. Dr. Bogue was a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School. He practiced at Grace Hospital in Detroit before entering private practice as an OB/GYN physician in Detroit. He moved to Bellaire upon his retirement in 1979. Dr. Bogue was a member of the American Medical Association, American College of OB/GYN's, Central Association of OB/GYN's, Michigan State Medical Society and the Wayne County Medical Society. He was a former member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Detroit. He is survived by son, Robert D. Virginia was born May 14, 1919, to Jesse and Pearl (Marsh) Reedy in Portland, Ind., where she was raised on a farm. Virginia met Karl Booher in Indiana, and they married in Greenville, Ohio. They settled in Albany, Ind., where she raised her family. After retirement in 1989, Karl and Virginia moved to northern Michigan, and stayed in the Suttons Bay and Traverse City communities. Over the years, Virginia had been a member of the Elks Club and was active with the Hospital Auxiliary. She loved working with arts and crafts and being involved with the area art shows. Virginia also enjoyed interior decorating. In her younger years she loved playing golf. Virginia is survived by two sons, Karl W. "Bill" Booher Jr. of Albany Ind., and Tim Booher of Staples, Minn.; and one daughter, Lynne (Chris) Buday of Williamsburg. She leaves six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle January 18, 2005 Bryan Orrie Boring Died January 13, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Bryan Boring, beloved family man and friend, died peacefully at his Florida home on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the age of 72. Bryan was born and raised in East Jordan, and lived for many years in the Traverse City area. He loved sports and was a gifted all-around athlete. He played football at East Jordan High School on the first team coached by Dan Devine, and is remembered in Dan's autobiography. He was also a fine scholar and graduated from high school as co-valedictorian in 1951. Bryan attended Alma College for three years. In December 1954 he married his wife of 50 years, Janet Paquette of Boyne City. Less than a year later he was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army. In 1958, Bryan earned a B.A. from Michigan State University in mathematics. His other academic accomplishments include an M.A. in educational administration from Eastern Michigan University, and an M.A. in mathematics from Bowling Green State University. Bryan taught mathematics at Plymouth High School for seven years before moving to Portage and beginning a career at IBM as an Advisory Systems Engineer. He transferred to Traverse City in 1970 and continued his work with IBM until his retirement in 1987. He and Janet owned a cottage on Torch Lake where he spent many happy days with family and friends. In recent years the family gathering place was a winter home in Lakeland, Fla. Bryan enjoyed walking, reading, and researching family history. His family was a source of great joy to him and he leaves behind his wife, Janet, and three children, Coleen (Paul) Corey, David (Rebecca) Boring and Mark (Stephanie) Boring. He had a close relationship with, and was very proud of his five grandchildren, Nick Corey, Brandy and Brianna Boring, and Christopher and Kaitlyn Boring. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Jack) Neumann; brother-in-law, Roger Harchis; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. We will all miss him dearly. Bryan was preceded in death by a brother, David; his parents, Orrie and Rosetta; and his sister, Barbara. Honoring Bryan's wishes, cremation has taken place. An avid golfer, she loved the game and was a member of the Sleeping Bear Golf League. Margaret was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland, and was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Good Harbor for many years. She was active in PEO, Easter Seals, hospital auxiliaries and church activities in each of the communities they served. After her husband's retirement in 1978, the couple moved to Florida, where they were active in their retirement community. They came to Pontiac 15 years later. Surviving are her husband of Pontiac, Ill.; a son, Jon A. (Joan) Bourne of Pontiac, Ill.; a daughter, Linda (Mrs. James) Howard of Traverse City; five grandchildren, including Beth, Kate and Meg Howard of Traverse City; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy "Dot" Schauffler of Horseheads, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Born on Sept. 10, 1930, in Groom, Texas, he was the son of John M. and Louise Britten. He graduated from Groom High School and served four years in the military during the Korean War. He then earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Detroit and Wayne State University in Detroit. On Aug. 17, 1957, at Duns Scotus College in Detroit, he married Jean Ellen Ward, who survives. For 25 years he worked for the Michigan Department of Education, in the field of vocational rehabilitation, helping the disabled find employment. Norman was active in the Civil Rights Movement and marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King in Selma, Ala. After retirement from state service he worked for Britten Inc., until recently. He wrote numerous letters to the Traverse City Record-Eagle, most having to do with his strong convictions relative to the Right to Life. Along with his wife, Jean, Norm is survived by four sons, Charles (Deb), John (Cordie), Paul (Darcy) and Thomas (Connie); two daughters, Therese (Bob) Rhein and Susan (Jim) McManus; 32 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Joyce M. Budnik Died March 12, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Joyce McLay Budnik, 92, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Joyce was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., July 2, 1912, one of five daughters born to Catherine Dorothea (Holmes) and John James McLay. She married Edward W. Budnik on Aug. 10, 1940, in Detroit. Joyce and Ed moved to Traverse City in 1948. A homemaker, Joyce was active in the life of the community, volunteering her time in various organizations including school functions, church and Munson Hospital. She was a member of First Congregational Church, The Order of the Eastern Star, the Traverse City Women's Club, the Elks Daisy Chain, and was a member of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club for over 50 years. Survivors include her children, Margie (Gary) Columbus of Traverse City and David (Sharon) Budnik of Atlanta, Ga.; her grandchildren, Michelle (Alan) Anderson of Alpharetta, Ga., Kelly (David) Jarrett of Park City, Utah, James (Jeanne) Cottom of Birmingham and Mark Cottom of Petoskey. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Erin and Ryan Anderson, Jack and Angela Jarrett; and three nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed on Sept. 22, 1996; and four sisters. Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 15, from 5 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at the funeral home with The Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Remembrance at First Congregational Church. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle January 5, 2005 ELLENTON, Fla. - Norma Elinor (Hooker) Burdick, of Ellenton, Fla., formerly of Traverse City, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at the home of her grandson, Jacob T. Harmon of Fife Lake. Her daughters, Diann (Don) N. Jones, Sue E. Sands and Elaine (Terry) C. Harmon and grandson provided her with three months of loving home care. She was able to enjoy the antics of the birds and squirrels and was happy to be staying with her family. Norma was born in 1916 in Fenton to Melvin C. Hooker and Effie Maude (Fagan) Hooker. She married Orvin W. Burdick, who died in 1976. She is survived by 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. All were dearly loved. Many thanks go to Irene Winn of Munson Hospice, Beverly Lardie and Pam Monhead. Cremation has taken place and private family services will be arranged in the future. Burry, 92, of Glen Arbor died Thursday at Tendercare of Traverse City, from complications of a stroke. Born Nov. 10, 1910, in Maple City, she was the daughter of Richard and Sophie (Dechow) Cluff. Leona was a 1928 graduate of Traverse City High School, attended Ferris College, and received her teaching certificate from County Normal. She then taught in the one-room schoolhouse in Bingham. On Oct. 22, 1937, in Grand Rapids, she married Clarence L. Burry, who preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 2001. Leona and Clarence owned and operated Burry's Dining Room in Cedar for 27 years. Following retirement from the restaurant, they moved to Glen Arbor. She had been a member of Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, the church Women's Guild and the Glen Lake Women's Club. Leona is survived by her son, Don (Peggy) Burry of Royal Oak; two daughters, Marcia (Fred) Gauthier of Glen Arbor, and Lori (Ron) Novak of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Renee (Rick) VanDaal of Oakland, Julie (Rob) Mueller of Troy, Kevin Gauthier of Oscoda, Norman (Peggy) Gauthier of Cedar, Kyle Novak and Carlee Novak, both of Traverse City; four great-grandsons, Michael and Nicholas VanDaal and Drew and Will Gauthier; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Sophie Watson. Leona was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Kucera; and two brothers, Leon and Richard Cluff.
