TRAVERSE CITY - Jack James Canfield, 71, of Traverse City, died Friday evening, Sept. 5, 2003, at Munson Medical Center following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born Jan. 20, 1932, in Flint, he was the son of the late Fred and Rosaline (Schmuckal) Canfield. On May 26, 1967, in Traverse City, he married Eleanor J. "Ellie" Tilton. He served with the United States Army as a paratrooper during the Korean conflict.Jack was the elected sheriff of Grand Traverse County for 12 years and employed by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office for 35 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Lake Sports Fishing Association, American Military League, Sheriff's Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and a life member of Cherryland VFW Post 2780 and the American Legion. Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing and excelled as a wild game chef. He cherished the time he spent with his family. In his retirement years, Jack loved fishing trips with his grandchildren, traveling and entertaining family and friends in Bokeelia, Fla. Jack is survived by his wife, Ellie; five children, son, Steven (Rosemarie) Canfield of Buckley and their nine children, Abraham, Isaac, Naomi, Zechariah, Jezreel, Seth, Nahum, Abigail and Ketura Canfield; daughter, Lynn Kelley of Interlochen and her three children, Erica (Wade) Kerby and Courtney and Autumn Kelley; daughter, Joan (Larry) Gardner of Grand Rapids and their three children, Jennifer, Justin and Benjamin Popa; son, Bill (Jennifer) Jarvis of Woodbine, Md., and their child, Logan Jarvis; and son, Dean (Deborah) Jarvis of Traverse City and their two children, Julia and Anna Jarvis; and his great-granddaughter, Josie Blake, daughter of Erica Kerby. Also surviving is a brother, Robert (Jeanine) Zeffero of Suttons Bay; sister, Margaret (Milford) Mackey of Traverse City; and sister, Jean (Lonnie) Burgess of Traverse City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Gardiner serving as celebrant. Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Long Lake Township, with full military honors under the auspices of Cherryland VFW Post 2780. She was born on Sept. 16, 1934, in Alpena, the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Ingaborg (Larson) Beauregard. Doris was a longtime member of the Salvation Army and served as the secretary for the Salvation Army League of Mercy. She will be truly missed by her loving family and many friends. She is survived by her three children, Christine L. Carr, Carrie (Darwyn) Dunham and Calvin L. Carr; six grandchildren, Courtney L., Calvin L. Jr., Jerry N. Carr, Sharayah N., Austin R. and Douglas J. Krumlauf; and one future great-granddaughter, Chloe Mae Stewart due April 25, 2005; sister, Carline V. Beauregard; brother Henry J. (Gertrud) Beauregard; and several nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her sister, Inez Henrietta Burns. Traverse City Record-Eagle January 10, 2005 Bernard Thomas 'Bernie' Carroll Died January 8, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Bernard Thomas "Bernie" Carroll passed away Jan. 8, 2005, at his ancestral home on Old Mission Peninsula. He was born June 9, 1927, the youngest son of Charles and Mary (Mulrooney) Carroll. Bernie was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mapleton, having served as an alter boy in the 1940s. Possessing an outstanding tenor voice, he sang at a multitude of events in his younger days and was often accompanied by pianist Margaret Tuller. He was best-known for his rendition of Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria." He graduated from St. Francis Catholic High School in 1946. As well as working the family cherry farm, Bernie was employed by Old Mission Peninsula School from 1966 to 1975, where he was in charge of the school buses. Over the years, he greatly enjoyed his interaction with the many local students who rode his bus #3. His riders especially liked his easy-going demeanor. Following the consolidation of schools in 1968, he was employed at the Traverse City Area Public Schools Bus Garage until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Elks Lodge #323, the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a frequent volunteer at the Father Fred Foundation. Above all else, Bernie was proud of his family and his homestead on Old Mission Peninsula. He reveled in the fact he lived at the highest point on the peninsula and cherished daily the panoramic views of East and West bays. Bernie will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was known as a gentle and kind man who always cared about other people, no matter their station in life. He is survived by his tireless caregiver and loving wife of 53 years, Beverly; three children, Cynthia M (Barry) Wolf, Daniel T. (Rosemarie) Carroll and Richard P. Carroll; three adored grandchildren, Courtney, Lindsay and Aynsley; his sister, Margaret Wenzel; sisters-in-law, Rose Carroll, Phyllis Richards, Gloria Kinnee; and his brother and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Kay Donner and Nancy and Wally Phillips. Carson, 71, of Boyne Falls, passed away Feb. 12, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family following a long struggle with cancer. Pat was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Petoskey, the daughter of Paul and Regina Snyder. The First National Bank of Petoskey employed Pat for several years; she eventually left to start a family. During her later years, she worked at the Boyne Falls Public School as an aide and then as a secretary to the principal. Pat retired in the late 1980s. Pat married Bill Carson on May 21, 1955, in Boyne Falls, and celebrated over 49 years of marriage until her death. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Pat enjoyed family gatherings at their summer home in Suttons Bay. She especially enjoyed being with her four grandchildren. Pat also spent time traveling with family and friends, and looked forward to spending the winters in Florida every year. Her loving family and friends will truly miss her. Pat is survived by her loving husband, Bill; daughters, Laurie (Dave) Houseman and Carol (Charlie) Tobel; son, Bill (Sally) Carson; grandchildren Paul, Samantha, Chris, and Matt. "Lee" Catrell, 77, formerly of Traverse City and Flint, died suddenly at his Torch Lake home Saturday, March 5, 2005. Born Sept. 20, 1927, in Flint, Lee was the son of Royal J. and Hilda (Brown) Catrell. On June 12, 1948, he married Eunice F. Valley in Flint. Lee was a retired combustion turbine supervisor with Consumers Power Co. Along with his wife and his daughter Jill, he was former owner and operator of L'DaRu Lakeside Resort on Spider Lake, from 1986-2000. Lee was the world's greatest husband, dad and grandpa. He enjoyed the time he spent with his family and grand-dogs. A trail-groomer extraordinaire, Lee was a past president of the Traverse City Snowmobile Council. He was a member of the Traverse City Motel Association, and a former member and board member of the Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau. Lee enjoyed square dancing and traveling. He was a member of Buttons & Bows, Shadow Casters and Advancers of Cadillac. He was a member of Forest Lake Bible Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eunice Catrell of Torch Lake; twin sons, Terry S. (Gina) Catrell of Saginaw and Barry C. (Alyce) Catrell of Grand Blanc; a daughter, Jill F. She gently passed from this life at home after enduring heart and respiratory illnesses. Julia maintained a positive interest in life until the end. Born Oct. 2, 1921, in Royal Oak, to Nellie (Dunsby) and John Brooks McClure, she graduated from Clawson High School in 1939, and later married Arnold D. Code. She worked in accounting and office management and was active many years in the Professional Business Women's Association and D.A.R. Ezra Parker Chapter. In addition to her daughter, Jane Code, Julia is survived by her sister, Mary Christine McClure (Walter) Drake of Traverse City; sister-in-law, Ann McClure of Berkley; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Robert Hager 'Bob' Conn Died March 12, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Robert Hager "Bob" Conn, 68, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, after a courageous, three-year battle with multiple myeloma. He had been a resident of Traverse City since 1999. Bob was an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church and during his 40-year career served the church as an educator, writer, editor and pastor. The church appointed him Assistant General Secretary for Higher Education, a capacity in which he acted as a liaison and consultant to United Methodist colleges and universities across the country. He retired as Professor Emeritus of Religion and Christian Education at Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, N.C. Throughout his life, Bob's great passions were philosophy, poetry, music and art. During his last years, he worked to promote the cause of world peace through activism on both local and national levels. He shared his political views with over 20,000 readers around the world via his weblog, "The Cornered Curmudgeon." Bob was born in Minneapolis, Minn., but spent most of his youth in Grand Rapids. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music from Aquinas College, his Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminar and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Northwestern University. During his first sojourn in Traverse City in the 1960s, Bob served as pastor at Asbury Methodist Church. Since his return to Traverse City in 1999, he had been an active member of Central United Methodist Church. Bob will be remembered as a challenging teacher, a wide-ranging scholar, a gifted writer, a warm-hearted humanitarian, and most fondly as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Bob is survived by his wife, Judy; his sister, Barbara; his four children, Steven, Kay, Sue and David; and six grandchildren; all of whom loved and revered him beyond measure. The family would like to extend special thanks to the physicians and staff of Traverse Area Hematology/Oncology and the oncology unit at Munson Medical Center. Their compassionate professionalism was instrumental in helping Bob find fulfillment during the years following his cancer diagnosis. A memorial for Robert H. Conrad, 67, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at his home. Paul was born Dec. 24, 1937, to Paul and Grace (Ingraham) Conrad Sr., in Detroit. He and his family lived in the Detroit area until 1987, when they moved to Traverse City. He was an independent public adjuster, also working as an adjuster for Citizens Insurance. Paul was a member of the Korean War vets, a volunteer with Alcoholics Anonymous, was active in fundraising for the Boy Scouts of America and was a former United States Coast Guard Power Squadron member. He loved hiking, boating, photography, dog sitting, and especially his beloved black lab, Caesar. Paul was like a dad to many of his son's friends, would instigate summer barbecues, and will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and outgoing friendliness. Paul is survived by Sharon Conrad; two sons, Mark and David Conrad; brother, Tom (Dee) Conrad of St. Augustine, Fla.; three sisters, Kathy (Mike) Nash of Fountain Valley, Calif., Carol (Bill) Funkhouser of Gainsville, Ga. and Sue (Ray) Lawrence of Hiawassee, Ga.; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Caesar. Cooley Died February 20 , 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Lois Elizabeth Cooley, daughter of Winfred and Flora May, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, in her hometown of Traverse City. Lois was born on Feb. 19, 1919, at Boardman Valley Hospital, and lived most of her life in the town she loved. Lois is survived by the large and loving family she nurtured and guided, Bye A. Cooley, her husband of 61 years and their children, Haroldee (Kelly), Jon (Mary) Dale (Larry Murton) and Sean (Lisa) are joined in mourning by their seven children, seventeen grandchildren and four and 7/8 great-grandchildren. Many cherished friends and dozens of nephews, nieces and cousins, who Lois included in her expansive definition of 'close' family, also grieve her death. Lois was a cook at the Traverse City State Hospital and in the school system, and gave years of service as a scout leader and church worker. She cooked in support of many groups at her beloved church and was especially proud of the church fair booth that she helped run at the county fair. Lois also treasured her membership in The First Christian Church of Ocala, Fla. Her church life sustained her through an eventful, if sometimes difficult, rich and varied life. Her membership in The First Christian Church was the touchstone of her life and her principle foundation. Cooper, 72, of Frankfort, formerly of Clarkston, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at her home. She was born June 20, 1932, in Pontiac, the daughter of John and Vivian Radenbaugh. Della married Jack Cooper on March 21, 1953, in Pontiac, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2000. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Della enjoyed gardening, and having lunch and shopping with her daughters. Cottay Died March 6, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Doris Marion Cottay, 86, of Traverse City and formerly of Palos Heights, Ill., died Sunday, March 6, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Doris was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Chicago, the daughter of Mary Emma Dawson Herrick and Heinrich Wilhelm Alfred Popkin. She married Robert George Cottay on Aug. 24, 1939, in Chicago. Doris was a beautician by trade, and for many years owned and operated her own salon in the Chicago area. She lived to play golf, enjoyed knitting, sewing, gardening, cooking and reading a good book. Survivors include her daughters, Judith A. (Bill) Nelson of Traverse City and Cheryl J. (Frank) Kazemek of Minnesota; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Angela was a kind-hearted, gentle soul who found beauty in all people and things. She went out of her way to please others and make sure everyone felt special and welcome. Her smile lit up everyone's heart. Angela's favorite thing was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed camping and spent many memorable, happy days out at Monocle Lake. It was very important to Angela to keep in touch with everyone via MSN chat and her cell phone. While Angie always enjoyed electronics and music, she also loved to bake, pick berries, crochet and sew. Angela was not one to ever seek the limelight or boast of her accomplishments. Angela always gave 110% and excelled at many things. She was a straight-A student, a gifted artist who loved to sketch and draw, and an outstanding athlete. Her passion was swimming and being a member of the swim team for Sault Area High School. She placed fourth in the UP finals this year in the 100 butterfly and helped her team take the gold in 400 freestyle relay, and silver in the 200 freestyle relay, in which they set a school record in both events. A loving sister, Angela could be counted on to be a friend and confidante to her sister, Joselyn. She always had a loving smile for brother, Marcel, and a warm cuddle for brother, Nick. Those who know and love her will never forget Angela's internal and external beauty. Her life was a universal example of how we should all live and celebrate life. 'Jim' Craig III Died January 29, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - James Alexander "Jim" Craig III, 68, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Jim was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Nov. 26, 1936, the son of Marguerite Virginia (Murbach) and James Alexander Craig Jr. On Aug. 28, 1965, in Fremont, Jim married Kathleen Geerlings. Following graduation from high school, Jim studied at Miami University, the University of Toledo and Wayne State University. His final graduate degree was a Specialist in Education. Jim was employed as the librarian at Livonia Churchill High School for three years, and then became the head librarian at Traverse City Central High School, a career spanning 28 years. As a member of The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, Jim, a lover of music, enjoyed participation in both choral and bell choirs. He was an outdoor sports enthusiast, enjoying cross-country ski racing, bicycling, sailing, and fishing. Jim enjoyed gardening and earned his Master Gardener designation. Jim was a life member of the Michigan Education Association Retired, and the Cherry Capital Rose Society. Jim will be remembered for his love of laughter and ability to tell a good story. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen "Katie"; his sister, Janet Craig Azar and her husband Hormoz of Norfolk, Va.; three nieces, Taraneh Azar of Rye, N.H., Afsaneh Ambrose of Vienna, Va., and Susan Jewell Bergmans of North Muskegon; a nephew, Thomas Jewell of Ft. Lester was a 1939 graduate of Traverse City High School, and served with the United States Army during World War II. He was a painter and decorator for sixty-five years in Traverse City, working in many homes, especially on Sixth St. He was also an excellent woodworker. He was a life-long member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where he was always very active and enjoyed singing with the male Quartet as well as in the choir. Born Feb. 11, 1921, in Traverse City, he was the son of Clarence and Sylvia (Groesser) Crain. On June 17, 1941, in Traverse City, he married Ella L. Williams who survives. Also surviving is his daughter, Linda (Sheldon) Penney of Saginaw; son, Art Crain of Kingsley; two sisters, Wanda Gray and Wava Ronk, both of Traverse City; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was born Oct. 25, 1947, in Lima, Ohio, the daughter of Glenna May (Williams) and James Thompson Howell. She married Maxwell "Mick" Crandall on July 22, 1972, in Hastings, where she was teaching, after which she moved to Traverse City. A graduate of Rockford High School, where she was homecoming queen and the head cheerleader, Lana continued her education at Central Michigan University, graduating with a major in Art and a minor in English. Lana taught school for a total of 20 years, 16 of those years at Traverse City West Junior High School, where she taught 8th grade English. She was also in charge of the Odyssey of the Mind program for several years. She was a giving person to all who crossed her path. Her children, grandchildren and students gave her a lot of enjoyment, and she was very proud of them. Her brave spirit and love of life was evident through her illness. Lana enjoyed painting, sculpting and drawing. The photo scrap books that she made for every special event the family had will always be cherished. She enjoyed acting at the Old Town Playhouse, having roles in "Steel Magnolias," "The Voice of Emma Fields" and "Other Northern Belles." Her love of the arts, teaching and children inspired her to author and illustrate a children's book, The Crabby Apple. In addition to her husband, Lana is survived by her parents; daughter, Kori Crandall Quinn and her husband, Anthony of East Grand Rapids; their children and her grandchildren, McMillan Anthony Quinn and Crandall Jason Quinn, both of East Grand Rapids; her son, Andrew McMillan Crandall and his fiancee, Emily Bowerman of Seattle; and her brother, Tom (Laurie) Howell of Boyne Falls. Lana was very proud of her children, grandchildren and family.
