Farnhill "The Tax Doctor" Died March 11,2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Norman Ronald Farnhill, 60, of Traverse City, went home to be with his Lord Friday, March 11, 2005, from Hackley Hospital in Muskegon. Norm was born on Nov. 21, 1944, in Bridgeton, N.J. Following graduation from high school, he went on to college to earn his degree in business administration. Norm served with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era, and following his discharge became an air traffic controller. He was an air traffic controller for 24˝ years, 14 of those years were spent at Cherry Capitol Airport. In conjunction with his position with the FAA, he also owned and operated his own tax business for 34 years, a business he thoroughly enjoyed. His local business was "The Tax Doctor," which was how most people knew him. He enjoyed working in the business with his daughters and will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his rose colored glasses and for his generosity to charities in the Grand Traverse Region. Norm is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Ann McKechnie, whom he married March 5, 1965, in Sault Ste. Marie; daughters, Patty Farnhill and her partner, Brian Williams of Traverse City, and Cheryl and her husband, Dewayne Litwiller of Traverse City; and the pride of his life, his grandson, Mason Litwiller. Norm was preceded in death by his mother, Mavis. Visitation will take place on Sunday, March 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Monday, March 14, with Pastor York Ash officiating. Following services, Norm will be cremated and his cremains will be buried in Oak Lawn Memorial Park in Sault Ste. Marie. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. FARR, 42, of Kalkaska, died Friday night, Jan. 28, 2005, in Crawford County, of injuries suffered in a snowmobile accident. 'VONNIE' FASEL, 75, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. 'Vonnie' Fasel Died February 27 , 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Lorraine Yvonne "Vonnie" Fasel, 75, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born July 12, 1929, near Monroe Center in Mayfield Township, Vonnie was the daughter of Dorothy (Hammer) and John Carlisle. A graduate of Kingsley High School, Vonnie played basketball during her high school years. After graduation, Vonnie worked as a waitress at the Wolverine Restaurant on Front Street in Traverse City. She then graduated from beauty school before her marriage to Ivan Fasel on Oct. 22, 1949, at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church. Vonnie was a homemaker and later was employed as a food demonstrator at Meijer. She enjoyed bowling and bingo and was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Survivors include her children, Vicki (Jeff) Walters of Bellaire, Pam (Dan) Forton and Joanne (Barry) Couturier, all of Traverse City, Greg Fasel and Michelle (Chas) Edwards of Interlochen; her grandchildren, Tracy (Tom) Cook, Scot Hopkins, Ben Forton, Jason (Bridget) Forton, Sarah and Claire Couturier, Brent and Shane Fasel, Judy and Cathy Edwards; and a great granddaughter, Chantel Cook. Also surviving are her siblings, Jack Carlisle and Carol Carlisle, both of Traverse City. Vonnie was preceded in death by her husband Ivan on Dec. 26, 1993, and by her parents, John and Dorothy. Visitation for Vonnie will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with the rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m. Deacon Rene Hoensheid will be officiating. Visitation will also take place Thursday, March 3, at St. Patrick Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the funeral Mass is celebrated at 11 a.m., with The Rev. Fr. William Lipscomb serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle February 28, 2005 Ingeborg G. Ferraro Died February 25, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Ingeborg G. Ferraro, 77, of Sault Ste. Marie passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at her son's home in Traverse City. She was born in Wansen, Germany, Jan. 4, 1928. In 1948, she married Anthony Ferraro, who was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army. An active member of St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral parish, Ingeborg enjoyed traveling abroad, music and cultural events, visiting marketplaces, spending time with family and visiting her many friends. During the winter months, she lived in Seminole, Fla. Her husband, Tony, preceded her in death after 41 loving years of marriage. Together, they were very active in the Knights of Columbus, the Christopher Columbus Society, the Elks Lodge and various church functions. A loving wife and mother, her faith, compassion, charity and strength were exemplary of how she lived her life every day. She is survived by her mother, Maria Miodonski of Sault Ste. Marie; her two daughters, Janie Blixt and her husband, Bud, of Negaunee and Barbara Fortin and her husband, Wayne, of Sault Ste. Marie; her son, Michael and his wife, Jeanne, of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Tony, Scott, Steve, Ryan, André, Jessica and Alexis; and two great-grandchildren, Landon and Bryce. Passed away suddenly, Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort. Leon was born on Oct. 29, 1939, in Beulah, the son of Arthur and Colleen Fewins. He graduated from the Benzonia High School and maintained a master's electrician license for over 40 years. He married Sandy McCarry on March 28, 1959. Leon retired from Pet Inc. in Frankfort, and had served as Business Agent for Local 81 and was the proud owner of 669 Salvage in Inland Township He truly enjoyed talking with people and making a great deal. His grandchildren will always remember drowning worms (fishing) with grandpa and the fun they had together. He was born Sept. 1, 1960, in Frankfort, the son of Stanley and Mary (Jewell) Finan Sr. Richard was the owner of Finan Services in Kaleva. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Onekama Lions Club and Ducks Unlimited. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed snowmobiling, playing golf, softball and basketball. On Aug. 22, 1986, in Kaleva, Richard married Theresa Smith, who survives him. He is also survived by his children, Brandon and Kalin; father, Stanley M. Finan Sr. of Onekama; brothers, Philip Finan of Onekama and Stanley "Mickey" Finan Jr. of Onekama; nephew, Ben Finan; and niece, Haylee Finan. Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Finan. Born in Bowling Green, Ohio, on Aug. 2, 1914, she was the daughter of Emanuel and Ethel (Greenlee) Hagemeyer. On July 17, 1943, in Portage, Ohio, she married Alden Fischer. He preceded her in death Feb. 18, 1998. Hazel was a homemaker who loved flower gardening and playing the piano. She was a member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She loved and enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Aileen (John) Hubbell; a sister, Laurene Shaffer; 10 grandchildren, James (Mike) Hubbell, Jeff (Cathy) Hubbell, Renae (Mike) Stachowski, Joe (Carrie) Hubbell, Jerry Hubbell, Amber Hubbell, Jonathon Hubbell, Rilee Hubbell, Justin Hubbell and Nettie Hubbell; and six great-grandchildren, Greg Peters, Chelsea Greene, Caleb Hubbell, Emily Hubbell, Dylan Stachowski and Jack Hubbell. "Bill" Fischer, 61, formerly of Traverse City, beloved father, grandfather, son and brother, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, while on a hunting trip in Walnut Ridge, Ark. He was born Aug. 17, 1943, in Saginaw, the son of Gertrude (Phillips) Fischer and the late Kenneth G. Fischer. He was a high school football and baseball official for many years. He loved the outdoors, playing golf, and hunting, and was a member of the Michigan Hunting Retriever Club. Bill was retired from Lucent Technologies. After retiring, he worked part-time at the Majestic Golf Course. He served in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne. Besides his mother, he is survived by three children and their spouses, Michael and Tina Fischer of Traverse City, Kelly and Keith Libby of Apple Valley, Calif., and Amy and Rex Bair of Hesperia, Calif.; and their mother, Betty Fischer of Hesperia, Calif.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers and their spouses, Ken and Mary Fischer of Harrisville and Jon and Mary Fischer of Midland; a sister, Geree Kay Boshaw of Shepherd; Bill's companion, Tricia Jacobs; many nieces and nephews; and his three good friends, Spike, Tar and Jake. He was born in Traverse City on June 19, 1981, to Gary Lee and Janet Marie (White) Flaska. Nathan graduated from Leland High School with the class of 2000, and was in his third year at Northwestern Michigan College. In high school, he played soccer, basketball and baseball. Nathan was an expert at building and rebuilding computers for his family and friends. He always enjoyed camping with his family and especially loved Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was an exceptionally hard-working, wonderful and happy-go-lucky young man who liked everyone he met and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Mrs. Flesher was a homemaker, a member of First Congregational Church and a life member of the DAV auxiliary. She very much enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Born June 7, 1915, June was the daughter of Levi and Anna M. (Melichar) Brief of Traverse City. On July 10, 1943, in Selina, Kan., she married Ervin Flesher; he preceded her in death in 1988. Surviving are two sons, Dale (Sandy) Flesher of Thompsonville and Wayne Flesher of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Jason (Cathy) Flesher, Kent (Tiffany) Flesher, Kendra (Jim) Lockard and Justin Flesher; and 13 great-grandchildren. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle Lucille Elaine Fox Died March 5, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Lucille Elaine Fox, 89, of Traverse City, formerly of Boyne City, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Lucille was born on April 25, 1915, in Boyne City, to Atwood and Minnie Sheaffer. On May 18, 1932, Lucille married Donovan S. Fox in Horton Bay. Together they farmed until 1948, when they became affiliated with the Ben Franklin Fox Variety Store in Boyne City, which Lucille and her husband eventually bought and operated for 32 years. Prior to residing in Traverse City, Lucille enjoyed her retirement years living in New Port Richey, Fla. One of Lucille's greatest joys was following the athletic endeavors throughout the years of her grandson, Kyle, who was the love of her life. Surviving Lucille are her daughter, Donna Manthei (Larry) of Traverse City; grandson, Kyle Kilcherman of New Jersey; brother, Atwood Sheaffer of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years, Donovan Fox; sisters, Margaret Deadman, Cecilia Fox and Catherine Cyr; and nieces, Peggy Forlini and Jane Muzyl. A celebration of Lucille's life will be held in the spring. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Pavilions for the wonderful care they gave Lucille during the last months of her life. Franke Sr. Died January 13, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Robert L. Franke Sr. passed away Jan. 13, 2005, at Tender Care in Traverse City. He was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Traverse City to Alfred and Edith (Barnes) Franke. He was employed by Oleson's Food Store as a young man of 20 years, and retired 60 years later at the wonderful age of 80. Bob's job as Farm Manager gave him many years of enjoyment. His greatest joy was raising the buffalo herd that is well-known in Traverse City and all of Michigan. The raising of the buffalo earned him the title "Buffalo Bob," by which almost everyone knew him. On Sept. 1, 1941, in Long Lake Township, he married Rachel M. Meyers, and they shared 61 years of marriage. He is survived by four loving children, Amanda Geiger, Robert Jr. (Laura) Franke and Terri (Lawrence) Smith, all of Traverse City, and Jeffrey (Shannon) Franke of Canton; two brothers, James (Pat) Franke and Jack (Jenny) Franke of Traverse City; three sisters, Joanne (Harry) Grennay of Washington, Elizabeth Pavlovic of Traverse City and Rosemary (Roy) Schnieder of Honor; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachael M. Franke; his parents; and a brother, William Franke. Robert was a devoted loving father and husband. He had a gentle soul, was liked by all and will be missed greatly by his children, grandchildren and friends. Audrey was born Oct. 10, 1935, in Detroit, the daughter of Michael William and Helen Stella (Blaztewski) Zajac. She was employed as an executive secretary for Pennsylvania Diesel Corporation, retiring in 1980. Audrey loved being a mother and grandmother, and volunteered at Munson Medical Center Pediatric Division. She liked gardening and sailing, and was very active in community events in the Elk Rapids area. Surviving are three sons, Charles (Margaret) Boon, Mark (Vicki) Boon and Chris Boon; one daughter, Mrs. David (Pam) Wiggins; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Wade, Jack, Tatum, Ellie, Matthew and Julane; brother, Donald Zajac; sister, Cindy Peterson; dearest friend, June Hemline; along with many close friends and family. Audrey was born in Detroit Oct. 18, 1935, the daughter of Michael William and Helen Stella (Blazejewski) Zajac. She was employed as an executive secretary for Peninsular Diesel Inc., retiring in 1980. Audrey loved being a mother and grandmother. She liked gardening and loved to sail. She was very active in community events in the Elk Rapids area, and was a volunteer at the Munson Medical Center Pediatric Unit. She is survived by three sons, Charles (Marget) Boone, Mark (Vicki) Boone and Chris Boone; a daughter, Pam (David) Wiggins; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Wade, Jack, Tatum, Ellie, Matthew and Julane; a brother, Donald Zajac; a sister, Cindy Peterson; her dearest friend, Julie Hemming; many close friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle February 17, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Melvin Alfred Freytag, 82, of Traverse City, and formerly of Wooster, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at his home. Born in Massillon, Ohio, on Aug. 23, 1922, he was the son of Louise Marie (Lehman) and Julius Wilhelm Freytag. He married Vallie Dean Davidson on June 9, 1947, in Massillon. She preceded him in death June 21, 2004. A veteran of World War II, Melvin had served in the United States Army Air Force as an infantryman in the 76th Division, being discharged in 1955 at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant with the U. S. A. R. He also was a recipient of the Bronze Star. Melvin earned a master's degree in forestry from Syracuse University, and had been employed as a state forester early in his career with the State of Ohio. He had been a member of the Society of American Foresters for over 50 years. He had a tremendous love for his children, grandchildren and his country. Survivors include his children, Jacqueline (Thomas) Brinkman of Dallas, William (Janet) Freytag of Denver, Debbie (Gordon) Smith of Lake Leelanau, Carl (Sara) Freytag of Indianapolis and Svend (Janice) Freytag of Bloomfield; eight grandchildren; a brother, Elmer (Lois) Freytag of Massillon, Ohio; and a sister, Florence (Karl) Engstrom of Kenansville, Fla. Cremation has taken place and family services will be held at a later date. The family is being served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Traverse City Record-Eagle Henry W. Fryzelka Died March 6, 2005 BUCKLEY - Henry W. Fryzelka, 79, a lifelong resident of Grant Township in Grand Traverse County, died peacefully with his family by his side March 6, 2005, at Munson Hospice House. Henry was born Feb. 25, 1926, at home, the son of Joseph J. and Anna (Kotula) Fryzelka. On April 27, 1946, he married the former Nellie M. Witkop, who became his best friend and farming partner. Nellie preceded him in death Aug. 2, 1976. Besides being a self-employed farmer for 67 years, Henry worked at Parsons Corp. and Cone Drive Gear/Textron. He was a member of the UAW Local 21 and the Eagles, Traverse Aerie No. 383. Most of his enjoyment was found in farming, gardening, woodworking and travel. Henry is survived by his two daughters, Joan Saul (Byron Kuenzer) of Kingsley and Betty (Bernard) Schaub of Saginaw; two grandsons, William (June) Schaub of Saginaw and Thomas Saul with the U. S. Navy in Tallahassee, Fla.; a granddaughter, Leta Saul of Mesick; and a step-grandson, Christopher (Linda) Kuenzer of Iron Mountain. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Tony, Tathan, and Kaylan of Saginaw, Michael, Jason, and Brenna of Mesick; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Margaret Fryzelka of Phoenix, and Jane Witkop, and a brother-in-law, John Witkop, both of Traverse City; and his best friend, Bill Rackow of Buckley. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nellie; one grandson, Ronald Schaub; siblings, Joseph, Edward, Louie, Ann Svec and Hattie Saul; brothers-in-law, John Saul and Charles Svec; sister-in-law, Monica Fryzelka. Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home Wednesday, March 9, from 5 until 8 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 10, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with The Rev. Father Kenneth Stachnik serving as celebrant. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the Mass at church. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
