WILLIAMSBURG - John A. Gaddis, 75, of Williamsburg, formerly of Central Lake and Detroit, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Munson Hospice House.

John was born April 9, 1929, in Harcoe, Ill., the son of John and Mary (Cunningham) Gaddis.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On Nov. 6, 1954, in Detroit, he married LuAnne (Bailie), who survives. They resided in Detroit for many years, where he worked as a Detroit Police Officer for 14 years. In 1967, they moved to Central Lake and he joined the Antrim County Police as an officer for 20 years.

Upon retiring, John and his wife opened, owned and operated "Thatsa Pizza" in downtown Central Lake.

Surviving are his wife; three children, John D. of Williamsburg, Robyn L. (Richard) Meadows of Harrisburg, Pa., and Robert W. of Grand Rapids; and four grandchildren, Nick and Katy Meadows and Matt and D.J. Gaddis.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at 7 p.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Munson Hospice House, 450 Brooks St., Traverse City, MI 49684. Arrangements are by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

EMILY BELANGER GARRANT, 27, of Indianapolis, formerly of Bellaire, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Roswell Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2005, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where funeral services will take place at 5 p.m. Burial will take place in the spring at the Eldred Cemetery in Kearney Township.

Died March 8, 2005
TRAVERSE CITY - Rebecca Nadine "Becky" Garrisi, 28, and her eleven month old son, Jesse Roy Garrisi, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Becky was born July 30, 1976, in Lansthul, Germany, the daughter of Edwin and Josie O'Daniel. Jesse was born March 31, 2004, in Traverse City, the son of Matthew and Becky.

Becky's love of family, faith and animals made her a strong person. She was always ready to lend a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on when needed.

Survivors include, husband and father, Matthew D. Garrisi; four year old daughter and sister, Heather; Becky's mother and her husband, Josie and Paul Martin of Traverse City; Becky's father, Edwin O'Daniel of Las Vegas; her sister, Michelle Mons and her two children, Ashley and Brandon; grandmothers, Maybelle Flees and Barbara Martin, both of Traverse City; Matthew's parents, Thomas and Pam Garrisi of Prescott, Ariz.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins, including Aunts Donna Green, Shirley Kukla, Mary Nichols and Uncle Louis Flees.

Rebecca was preceded in death by infant son, Tommy in 1999.

A memorial service for Rebecca and Jesse will be held Monday, March 14, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Traverse City Church of the Nazarene, on the corner of 14th Street and Division. The Rev. Rick Rice will officiate. Burial will take place in Grawn Maple Grove Cemetery.

TRAVERSE CITY - James E. Gauthier, 69, of Traverse City, died at home Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. Born June 8, 1934, in Leelanau County, he was the son of Isadore and Esther (Dinger) Gauthier. On Jan. 16, 1954, in Traverse City, he married the former Phyllis Broad, who survives. Together on Aug. 30, 2003, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends.Jim served his country honorably with the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War. He and Phyllis later owned Jim Gauthier Auto Camper Inc., which they operated for 22 years, selling cars and truck toppers. Jim also worked for the Traverse City Regional State Hospital for 25 years and drove a school bus for about 20 years. Jim was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, belonged to the Knights of Columbus for 48 years and volunteered with Gladhander for 10 years. His hobbies included canning, cooking, dancing and singing country music. He will be fondly remembered for having a big heart and always lending a helping hand to anyone in need. Along with his wife, Phyllis, Jim is also survived by 10 children, Jenell (Bob) McKee and her children, Andy (Regina) Meachum and Monica Bagio of Marquette; Debra (Greg) Eikey and their children, Erin, Kristin, Eric, Kollin, Elaina and Karson of Roswell, Ga.; Jeff (Amy) Gauthier and their children, Catherine and Nick of Flourisant, Mo.; Jon (MaryAnne) Gauthier and their children, Laura, Melissa and Jon Philip of Charlotte, N.C.; Mary Kay (Ernie) Gross and their children, Abby and Kenton of Alpharetta, Ga.; Colleen (Christopher) Smith and their children, Gordie and Mikaela of Traverse City; Ernie (Kim) Gauthier and their children, Josie and Cassie of Brentwood, Tenn.; Ben (Jill) Gauthier and their children, Jacinda, Justina, Tessa, Travis and James of Pataskala, Ohio.; Paul Gauthier of Chicago, Ill., and Megan Gauthier of Atlanta, Ga. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Ryan Meachum and Tyson, Kameika and Zavier Bagio. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; five children, Tom, Kathy, Jacquelyn, Michelle and Kelly Sue; and three brothers, Delbert, Gilbert and Claude Gauthier. Friends may call today, Sept. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Solon Township Cemetery, with military honors under the auspices of Cherryland VFW Post 2780. In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the Gauthier Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the Immaculate Conception Food Pantry.

KEITH A. GEE, 78, of Traverse City and Clearwater, Fla., died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla.

David Martindale 'Doc' Gerber, M.D.
Died February 4, 2005
LOUISVILLE, Colo. - David Martindale "Doc" Gerber, M.D., died in Louisville, Colo., Feb. 4 ,2005, at the age of 86. He was born April 5, 1918, in Middletown, Ohio, to Dr. David Frederick and Ruth Gerber.

He graduated from Yale University and Cornell Medical School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, returning to Middletown to assume his father's general surgery practice, specializing in cancer treatment.

He is survived by his loving wife, Page; two daughters, Susan (Butch) of Prescott, Ariz., and Ellen of Ann Arbor; three sons, David and George of Los Angeles and John of Arvada, Colo.; two step-daughters, Mary Beth (David) Driscoll of Longmont, Calif. , and Amy Phelps of Mill Valley, Calif.; three grandchildren, Jesse, Jill (Willie) and Blakeslee; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William; and first wife, Jane.

TRAVERSE CITY - Patricia Ann Gillette, 70, of Traverse City, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005. She was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Detroit, to Raymond Keith Pearce and Frances Elizabeth (Hughes) Pearce.

Pat was a highly social person with an easy smile and a genuine interest in people. Her gift for gardening could transform a lunar landscape in to a plethora of flora in a single season. A true "flour" child, Pat delighted in fattening up family and friends with her wonderful cakes and cookies. As an unrepentant workaholic, she had a long and varied resume that included stints as a legal secretary and more than 20 years as a scan coordinator for the Kroger Company in Milford. In her "retirement," she worked at Sears in Traverse City.

She is survived by two sisters, Florence (Lyle) Hukill of Osseo and Deanna (Dale) Bernath of Waldron. Also surviving are three sons, Raymond (Jan) Pezzi of Traverse City, Kevin (Carolyn) Pezzi, MD of Thompsonville and Jeffrey (Sarah) Pezzi of Flushing; and grandsons, James, Kyle, Jeffrey, Matthew and Alexander.

Services will be held Monday, Jan. 24, at 2:30 p.m., at Long Lake Friends Church, 4172 Church Road, Traverse City.

Memorials may be made to Long Lake Friends Church.

TRAVERSE CITY - Vickie Lynn Gilliam, 45, of Traverse City, formerly of Oklahoma City, died Friday Jan. 28, 2005, at her home.

Born Feb. 22, 1959, in Vallejo, Calif., she was the daughter of Franklin Donald and Evelyn Joyce (Williams) Stuhr.

Vickie was known as the gal with the outgoing personality and contagious smile. She will be sorely missed by her loving family and many, many friends.

A true animal lover, she enjoyed raising her six cats and always had room in her home for one more stray. Whether it was an animal or a friend, she was always willing to lend a helping hand.

She is survived by her son, Andrew M. Gilliam; daughter, Nicole E. Gilliam; grandson ,Tristin Martin; and her former husband and best friend, Ronnie Martin Gilliam, all of Traverse City; mother and stepfather, Evelyn J. and Dee Smedley of Oklahoma City; father, Frank Stuhr of Memphis Tenn.; sister, Lynda Lyon of Traverse City; and brother, Richard (Dianna) Stuhr of Oklahoma City.

Friends may call at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, Feb. 2, 2005, from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with Pastor York Ash officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

BAY CITY - Robert E. Gillman, 90, died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Bay Medical Care Facility.

A lifelong Bay City resident, Bob was a master plumber and administrator of the Bay County Juvenile Home for 21 years.

He lived a full and active life, including over 40 years of league bowling until only two years ago. Bob had never been hospitalized until the onset of his final illness on Christmas Eve.

Surviving are five children, three stepsons and 27 grandchildren. Northern Michigan family members include his oldest son, Michael J. (Betty) Gillman of Traverse City; grandsons, Michael Gillman of Grand Rapids, Steven Gillman of Traverse City and Tucson, Jason Gillman Sr. of Traverse City, Andrew Gillman of Ypsilanti and Christian Gillman of Interlochen. His 36 great-grandchildren include Jason Gillman II and Corri Gillman of Traverse City, plus Christian M., Alex, Blake and Jacqueline Gillman of Interlochen. He also leaves behind a nephew, James Lutzke of Cadillac.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at noon, in St. James Church in Bay City.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. James Parish or the donor's choice of charity.

BRADENTON, Fla. - Ruby F. Gilmore, 94, formerly of the Old Mission Peninsula, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in Bradenton, Fla.

She was born Jan. 13, 1910, in Sheridan, Ind., the daughter of Harvey and Lyle Jarrett. She married Merton A. Gilmore in 1928, and lived for many years on the Old Mission Peninsula.

Ruby loved golf, horses and cooking for her family. Her greatest love was her grandchildren, and they have many wonderful memories, especially of Grandma taking them camping.

Ruby was a member of the (Ogdensburg) Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau and the Old Mission Women's Club. .

Ruby is survived by a stepson, Clyde R. Gilmore of Kewadin; two daughters, Claudette R. Gilmore and Alice E. (Jack) Lardie, both of Traverse City; two grandchildren, Shannon (Tim) Burch of Lake Ann and Sean (Heather) Lardie of Traverse City; four great-grandchildren, Tessa, Jackson, Hanna, and Hayeden; four sisters, Mabel Jamieson of Traverse City, Helen O'Neil of Palmetto, Fla., Frances Hill of Palmetto, Fla. and Thyrza Gilmore of Bradenton, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merton in 1968; a brother, Elmer Jarrett; and a sister, Mary Jarrett.

Funeral services will take place Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. David Minger will officiate. Burial will be in Ogdensburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church.

SUN CITY, Fla. - Robert Bryan Girdley Jr., 55, died at the LifePath Hospice House in Sun City, Fla., on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004.

He graduated from Milford High School in 1968. Robert went on to the Lawrence Institute of Technology, where he graduated in 1976, becoming a certified public accountant. He practiced throughout the state of Michigan but predominately in Gaylord and Traverse City.

Robert was stricken with either M.S. or A.L.S., neurologists never agreed on the diagnosis. However, death was a slow and painful process, of which no one deserves. I just want to let you know you were loved, dad, and will be missed.

He is survived by his mother, Billie Ladon and Charlie Bays; brother, Craig (Sue) Girdley; daughter and son-in-law, Randi and Scott Whitney; along with his four grandchildren, Zachary, Logan, Kaiden and one soon to be born in May. He is also survived by the one woman for whom he always had love until the day he died, Betty Ann Moyer.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert Bryan Girdley Sr.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Christ of the Lakes Lutheran Church, 9101 Highland Road, White Lake, MI. There will be food and fellowship at the church following the service .

TRAVERSE CITY - Louise H. Glauch, 96, a homemaker of Traverse City, died Sunday morning, Jan. 9 , 2005.

A native of the Grand Traverse Area, Louise was born on May 2, 1908, in Traverse City, the daughter of the late George and Jenny (Hollister) Hamlin.

Louise was a very giving person and enjoyed volunteering for the Commission on Aging in Kalkaska, as well as many other organizations. She also thoroughly enjoyed spending the summer months at the family cabin on Rugg Road in Kalkaska County, where she cultivated many long-lasting friendships. Louise will be fondly remembered for her stories, as she was a wonderful storyteller.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Glauch of Traverse City; two grandsons, Chris (Missy) Glauch of Denver, Colo. and Tom (Debra) Glauch of Traverse City; and a granddaughter, Susan (Pat) Pahl of Traverse City. She is also survived by many dear friends and neighbors in Traverse City, as well as the Kalkaska area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil C. Glauch; son, George "Bud" Glauch; and a granddaughter-in-law, Susan (Spaulding) Glauch.

Graveside services will be held this summer at Oakwood Cemetery, with the time to be announced.

In remembrance of Louise, memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice.

ELK RAPIDS - Mary Minerva Glick, 83, of Noble Pines Senior Apartments, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Meadow Brook Manor Nursing Home in Bellaire.

Mary was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Ruhls, Md., the daughter of William Thomas and Rena Viola (Hare) Sater. On Jan. 31, 1944, in Rayville, she married the Rev. Paul H. Glick, who preceded her in death Feb. 17, 1989.

A Prayer Warrior, she was a deacon for the Elk Rapids Presbyterian Church. From 1988 to 1989, Mary was the coordinator for the Elk Rapids Senior Center, and was very active for Antrim County as a senior companion for 13 years. She enjoyed watching birds and gardening.

Survivors include one daughter, Paula Glick; three sons, David Glick, Jesse (Janet) Glick and Jonathan (Carol) Glick; one sister, Nora Rohrbaugh; and four grandchildren, Stephen, Matthew, Daniel and Steven Glick.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Paul H. Glick; brothers, Harold and Bill; and sister Loretta. A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at 4 p.m., at the Elk Rapids Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlin officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

STANLEY "STAN" GOODMAN, 68, of Williamsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.

WILLIAMSBURG - Stanley "Stan" Goodman, 68, of Williamsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Stan was a lifelong resident of the Williamsburg area.

He was born in Milton Township on July 16, 1936, the son of Cecil G. and Velma E. (Bussa) Goodman. On Aug. 17, 1957, in East Detroit, he married the former Peggy Monroe.

A self-employed carpenter, Stan was a member of the East Bay Calvary Church and the East Bay Masonic Lodge.

He loved to play music, the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and was known for playing the saw. He enjoyed the outdoors, horseback and trail riding, hunting turkey, deer and coon, blacksmithing, wine making, sauerkraut making and gardening. Stan was a very talented man and was always helping others.

Stan is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy Goodman of Williamsburg; son, Brian (Karen Vance) Goodman of Alden; daughter, Gail (Gerald) Goodman-Hanna of Guelph, Ontario, Canada; son, Mark (Sandy) Goodman of Kingsley; daughter-in-law, Diane Benak of Grawn; seven grandchildren, Dustin Goodman, Cody Goodman, Samantha Goodman, Alicha Goodman, Miranda Goodman, Courtney Goodman and Kethra Hanna; mother, Velma Goodman of Elk Rapids; sister, Emily (Dale) Dillon of Elk Rapids; two brothers, Allen (Louise) Goodman of Vassar and Roger (Connie) Goodman of Portland, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Kurt and Edith Ziebart.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Goodman; son, Randy Goodman; and brother, Larry Goodman.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, from the Covell Funeral Homes of Traverse City, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at 3 p .m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sheldon Reist officiating. There will be an additional visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be directed to the East Bay Calvary Church.

TRAVERSE CITY - Edith E. Goodwill, 77, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Ritter's Senior Adult Living Center, where she had made her home.

Edith was born on Oct. 25, 1927, in Anniston, Ala., the daughter of Vivian (Jett) and Robert Jackson. She married Roy Wayne Goodwill on Aug. 2, 1945, in Jacksonville, Ala.

A resident of this area for over 50 years, Edith and her husband had lived in Cadillac previously, where she had been employed by boat companies. Here, she was employed by Kroupa's Orchard.

Edith enjoyed crocheting and playing bingo, as well as gardening with her husband.

Edith is survived by her sister, Ruby Sasnett of Anniston, Ala.; her brother-in-law, Chuck Klopfer; her dear friends, the Stein Family of Fife Lake and her "Ritter" family. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1990; her sister, Mearl Jackson; brother Otto Jackson; and sister-in-law, Rose Klopfer.

Memorial services are being planned to be held in warmer weather. Interment, following cremation, will take place at Fife Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

BENZONIA - Henry Goorhouse, 91, of Benzonia, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Dec. 7, 1913, in Joyfield Township, the son of Garrett and Mary Ann (Lamb) Goorhouse.

Henry retired from the Ann Arbor Railroad and Carferry, where he worked as an engineer. He enjoyed going out for dinner, car rides, taking vacations, spending time with his family and visiting with his neighbors.

Henry is survived by his daughter, Betty J. Freel of Benzonia; three sons, Terry (Bernice) Goorhouse of Mountville, Henry L. (Ellen) Goorhouse of Benzonia and Robert (Barbara) Goorhouse of Decatur; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On Jan. 15, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, Henry married Verbia F. Reynolds, who preceded him in death in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his son, Forydes Goorhouse.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Interment will be in the Joyfield Township Cemetery in the spring.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pentecostal Church or to a charity of one's choice. Envelopes are available at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home.

TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Catherine Gould, 92, of Traverse City, formerly of Battle Creek, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at home in Traverse City. She was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Springfield, Ore., to Catherine (Heether) and Edward Zuber.

She received her master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan and worked for a number of years as an intake worker at Burca of Social Aid. After completing her master's of arts degree she worked for many years as a school social worker, serving the Springfield and Lakeview school systems. A grass roots social worker, Helen was highly dedicated to her work.

Helen was compassionate in her work and possessed a good sense of humor. Her life typified the saying, "May charity be the root and foundation of your life."

She is survived by Virginia (Will) Willsey of Traverse City and five step grandchildren.

In 1938 she married Raymond Gould, who preceded her in death, as did a sister, Rose Zuber.

Friends may call Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at the Shaw Funeral Home in Battle Creek, where family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at 10 a.m., at St. Philip Catholic Church in Battle Creek, with the Rev. Fr. Charles Fischer officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may go to the Humane Society for the Calhoun Area.

SANFORD, Fla. - Family and friends mourn the passing of a bright light in their lives. David E. Green, 63, of Sanford, Fla., formerly of Traverse City, succumbed, after a long illness and a valiant fight, on Jan. 24, 2005. The eagle soars and so does he.

He was born in Traverse City on March 26, 1941, the son of the late Earl and Virginia (Hanna) Green. Dave married Shirlee (Sobbry) Shumsky on March 17, 1979, in Elk Rapids, and shortly after they moved to Florida when Dave's trade as a drywall finisher took him to Disney's Epcot Center, where he worked for several years.

Dave had an outstanding reputation for over 25 years as a fast-pitch baseball player in Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida. He pitched four games in a row to win Wisconsin's Allstate Class C Men's Fast-pitch Tournament in 1978. He was clocked at 101 miles per hour and voted Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher.

His love of the outdoors included fishing and hunting in northern Michigan. He was an avid golfer, experiencing not one, but two holes-in-one. He and Shirlee shared their enthusiasm for bingo and cards with many friends and family.

He was a member of Sanford Elk's Lodge 1241 and Lion's Club.

Dave loved life, family, friends and his dog, Sassy. He will always be remembered as a generous and giving friend to many, with a great sense of humor.

Along with his wife, Shirlee, Dave is survived by his children, Timothy and Mark Green of Traverse City, Terry (Edna) Green of Apopka, Fla., and Lori (Ronald) Spohn of Spring Creek, Nev. Stepchildren include Patricia (Dan) Greene of Jackson, Richard Shumsky Jr. and Betsy Palmer of Sanford, Fla., and Connie (Bill) Perkins of Deltona, Fla. Brothers and sisters include Jerry (Donna) Green, Vicki (Alfred) Scriver, Minnie (Art) Gagnon, Betty (Merlin) Shawnoskey, all of Traverse City, Robert (Patricia) Green of Spring Lake, Beverly (Lonnie) Schaub of Kingsley and Paula (Larry) Gauthier of Grawn. Survivors also include 23 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

His children's mother, Beverly J. Green, preceded him in death in 2003.

A line from one of his favorite songs is, "Six days on the road and I'm gonna' make it home tonight." It's been a long road, Dave, but you're home now.

The Banfield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Traverse City this summer.

TRAVERSE CITY - Paul A. Green, 86, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Munson Hospice House. A resident of Traverse City, he was born Sept. 2, 1918, in Grant.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Agnes "Ronnie" Green of Traverse City; three children, Barbara, Nancy and William; five grandchildren; and his brother, Leo.

During World War II, Paul served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific.

After to moving to Traverse City over 50 years ago, Paul worked in the ceramic tile and building supply business. He was a talented do-it-yourselfer, and derived great joy keeping everything in the house in tip-top shape. He was a devoted husband and father.

At his request, a private funeral service will take place.

Memorials may be given in Paul's name to Munson Hospice House.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

TRAVERSE CITY - James R. "Jim" Greenman, 69, of Traverse City, died at home Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, after a short illness.

Born July 12, 1935, in Antrim County, he was the son of Earl Milford and Dorothy Thelma (Metzgar) Greenman. On Jan. 18, 1958, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Coldwater, he married Marlene Fredrickson.

Jim was a tool and die maker, starting his career with Oldsmobile in Lansing, then working for the Parson Corporation here in Traverse City before venturing out on his own. Jim loved to work, and in 1969 he started Pinecrest Engineering, continuing to work through his retirement. Both of his sons continue to work at the family business. They remember being able to present a problem to their dad, let him sleep on it, and nine times out of ten he would return the next morning with a workable solution.

In 1954, Jim graduated from Traverse City Central High School, where he played basketball. An active member of the College Terrace Wesleyan Church, where he loved to sing, he taught Sunday school for over 40 years.

Jim had a great love for his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He especially liked the family home on Long Lake, where he enjoyed gazing at the lake from his "home" office, putting the dock in and taking it out, and retrieving the grandchildren's toys before they floated away. Jim lived for family and attended his grandchildren's games of hockey, soccer, basketball and baseball.

For over 30 years, Jim frequented Bells restaurant for breakfast, where he sat at the same table with his friend and business partner, Phil Pelky. For the last twelve years, Jim joined good friends Don and Leroy for breakfast at Big Boy restaurant.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; three sons, Steven (Kim) Greenman, Gary (Kristi) Greenman and Christopher Greenman, all of Traverse City; mother, Dorothy Greenman of Monett, Mo.; brothers, Charles "Pen" (Carol) Greenman and Earl "Chum" (Bernie) Greenman Jr., both of Traverse City; sister, Ethelwyn "Winnie" (Stewart) Strong of Monett, Mo.; and eight grandchildren, Nick, Nate, Andrew, Aaron, Ben, Brady, Eric and Matthew.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Earl Milford Greenman.

Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m., at the College Terrace Wesleyan Church, where the family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Pastor Timothy Morris will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan.

Memorial contributions may be considered to College Terrace Wesleyan Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.

FARMINGTON, N.M. - "I am circling around God, around the ancient tower and I have been circling for a thousand years, and I still don't know if I am a falcon, or a storm, or a great song."

Dudley was born May 9, 1941, in Santa Fe, N.M. His parents and his brother preceded him in death and have greeted him in Heaven.

He has left behind his loving companion, Carol Walker; his daughter, Kathleen and her companion, Dave, of San Diego, her daughters, Kelly and Ellen, and her son, Todd; and his son, Michael, and his wife, Beth of Traverse City, and their daughter, Kate, and son, Jack.

He was loved and loving, and shall be missed by his family and many treasured friends.

TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Jane McLellan Grohs, 82, of Traverse City, and long-time Midland resident, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Traverse Manor Assisted Living Facility. She was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Bay City, to the late John and Anna (Blondin) McLellan.

On May 2, 1942, she married Andrew Grohs in Bay City. In 1957, they established Grohs Oil Company in Midland, which they owned and operated for over 30 years. She was vice president and secretary of the corporation.

Mary Jane was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Midland Country Club. In 2002, to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Mary Jane moved to Traverse City, where she flourished in this environment.

She is survived by two daughters, Christine Patrick and Andrea Taylor, both of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Paul (Mary Ann) Grohs of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Cynthia Taylor of Sugar Hill, Ga., Jennifer Patrick of Charlotte, N.C. and Andrew Patrick of Bradenton, Fla.; two brothers, Eugene (Marge) McLellan and Fred McLellan, all of Bay City; sister-in-law, Helen McLellan of Traverse City; and 23 nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Andy on Jan. 6, 1998; her parents; four brothers, Jack, R.J., Tom, and Lt. Col. Robert McLellan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Jan. 13, 2005, at 11 a.m., from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where Mary Jane's family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass. The Rev. Rather Peter J. Gaspeny will officiate, with burial in New Calvary Cemetery.

Bruce William Groomes

EMPIRE - Bruce William Groomes, 74, of Empire, formerly of Whitmore Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 26, 1930, in Whitmore Lake, the son of William Henry and Mary Margaret (Heenan) Groomes. On Oct. 7, 1953, he married Gloria Lee "Pat" Voice in Boston.

Bruce was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a lifetime member and past post commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hamburg, Mich. Bruce had also been a member of the Whitmore Lake Rod and Gun Club.

Bruce enjoyed fishing, woodworking, watching the Detroit Red Wings, solving crossword puzzles, collecting lighthouses, and playing poker and bingo. He loved sitting out on the swing and talking with passers-by; and he especially loved spending time with his golden retrievers.

In addition to his wife, Gloria "Pat" Groomes, he is survived by three children, Danette (Rick) Smith of Pinckney, Jeff W. (Nanette) Groomes of Whitmore Lake and Kelly M. (Mary) Groomes of Brighton; five grandchildren, Kendra (Mosie) Ruderman of Fenton, Ryan Smith of Muskegon, Melody Groomes of Brighton, Angela Kerrigan of Whitmore Lake and Elizabeth Kerrigan of Whitmore Lake; one great-granddaughter, Lilyan Smith of Fowlerville; his chosen daughters, Joanne (David) Klankey of Jackson and Anna Graham of Westland; his sister, Marion (Pete) Kessler of Whitmore Lake; two nieces, Wanda and Lisa; two very close friends, Harry Bater and Dick Hein; and his faithful companions, Bumper and Sophie.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, and a great-granddaughter, Alexandria Smith.

The family will receive friends to celebrate Bruce's life on Sunday, Feb. 20, at the Groomes' residence in Empire from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial services will be held in Pinckney in May.

OSCODA - S. Bayard Gum, born July 18, 1928, in Buckhannon, W.Va., died in his Florida home on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully after a bravely fought battle with lung cancer. Bayard and his wife, Sue are residents of Oscoda and have been wintering in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Mr. Gum graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School in 1946 and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College. He also attended Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan.

He was the son of W.B. Gum and Gladys Ione Simons of Buckhannon, W. Va., and moved to Oscoda in 1952 when he served in the United States Air Force.

He became a teacher of English and Speech, and a coach of Debate and Forensics at Oscoda High School. He led the Oscoda Debate team to several state finals. He retired from teaching in 1986 after 37 years.

Mr. Gum was one of the first licensed Charter Boat captains in the state of Michigan. He organized the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Oscoda, and was its first commander.

His interests included fly fishing, hunting, golf and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Gum (Wilfong); his son, Dr. Kenneth B. Gum of Traverse City and his wife, Marilyn; and two grandchildren, Zane and Zoe. His daughter, Dana Wright and her husband, Jim live in Frederick, Md., where Dana is an art teacher. Bayard also has many relatives and loving friends.

A small memorial ceremony took place March 2, 2005, at Florida Memorial Hospital chapel in Ormond Beach. A formal memorial service will take place this summer in Oscoda at the Oscoda United Methodist Church, where he has been a long-time member.

Announcements will be forthcoming regarding any memorial gifts in his honor.
