TRAVERSE CITY - Inez Carr Hagerman, 105, of Traverse City, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. She was born Dec. 31, 1899, to William W. and Mabel (Pingry) Carr in Rhinelander, Wis., the fifth of six children.

She married Ivan L. Hagerman on July 3, 1925, in Minneapolis, where she lived most of her life, moving to Escondido, Calif., upon her husband's retirement. She came to Michigan in 1989, living in Midland and Saginaw, before moving to Traverse City.

Inez is survived by her sons, John W. (Carolyn) Hagerman of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Robert L. (Patricia) Hagerman of Glen Arbor; grandchildren, Dean Hagerman, John F. Hagerman, Carr Hagerman, Susan (Foster) Beste, Nancy (Foster) Petrella, Douglas Foster Jr., Carol (Foster) Petrella, Scott Hagerman and Julie (Hagerman) Forbes; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, her daughter, Mary L. (Douglas) Foster; and her grandson, Robert C. Hagerman preceded her in death.

An interment service will take place at St. Marks Cathedral Church in Minneapolis at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice, Grand Traverse Pavilions or St. Marks.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes of Traverse City.

MARJORIE W. HALL, 96, of Manistee, died at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility Friday, Jan. 124, 2005.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with an Eastern Star memorial service at 8 p.m.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Manistee United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the spring in Maple Grove Cemetery, Freesoil.

FRANKENMUTH - Kenneth W. Hansen, of Frankenmuth, was born May 5, 1914, in Detroit, to Catherine Radermacher Hansen and Edward Hansen. On June 5, 1936, he married Helen J. Bosworth, who survives him.

In 1944, he and his wife moved from the Detroit area to Fife Lake, where they operated a resort on Fife Lake until his retirement. He retired from Cone Drive Gear in Traverse City in 1978.

Ken was an active member of the Fife Lake Methodist Church and The First Methodist Church in Stuart, Fla. He was also a member of the Methodist Church in Caseville. An active member of the Fife Lake Historical Society, he had a big part in the rebuilding of the Fife Lake Historical Museum.

Surviving, besides his wife, Helen, are two daughters and one son, Juanita (Tom) Dupuie of Frankenmuth, Judith (John) Euler of Benton Harbor and James of Holt; nine grandchildren, Mark Dupuie, Brian Dupuie, Kirk Dupuie, Bradley Dupuie, Randall Perrin, Russell Perrin, Ryan Perrin, Paul Hansen and Joel Hansen; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Jerold Edward Hansen in 1958; his parents; and a sister, Clarissa Busch.

Memorial services will be held at a later date and will be announced at the Fife Lake Methodist Church.

Memorials may be considered to the Lutheran Home of Frankenmuth or Hospice of Hope.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth.

David Franklin Harju
Died March 10, 2005
BEAR LAKE - David Franklin Harju, 61, of Bear Lake, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at home with his family. He was born on July 26, 1943, in Bear Lake, the son of August and Hilja (Hiipakka) Harju.

David graduated from Kaleva High School in 1962. He earned his living as a union carpenter working with Local #202 for over 35 years.

David was an avid gardener, and enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family. David was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva.

On May 1, 1965, in Kaleva, David married Jamie L. Madsen, who survives him. They were married for 39 years. David is also survived by his son, Matthew Harju of Bear Lake; brother, Clarence (Carol) Harju of Kaleva; sister-in-law, Sylvia Harju of Kaleva; brother-in-law, Norman Kaskinen of Kaleva; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Martha Kaskinen; and brothers, Elwyn Harju and Milton Harju.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 13, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 14, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva, with Reverend Wayne Buskirk officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Lutheran Church. Envelopes are available at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.

BARBARA ELAINE HARMER, 74, of Frederic, formerly of Flint, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home, Grayling.

The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Frederic.

Harpe, Melvin J. 92, formerly of Hart went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at his home in Georgetown, Ky., where he has lived with his son’s family for the last six years. May God grant special blessings to Richard and Yvonne for their unending care and devotion to Dad throughout these past six years. Melvin was born June 25, 1915 in Lake Leelanau, Mich., the oldest child of Alex and Melinda Harpe (Dupperon). He married Ellamae Grewe Oct. 5, 1939 and was a loving and devoted husband until her death in 2003. He retired from Teledyne Continental in Muskegon in 1972 and spent many years enjoying his retirement. His greatest joy came from being with his family. Surviving are his six children: Robert (Eileen) Harpe of Crossville, Tenn.; Richard (Yvonne) Harpe of Georgetown, Ky.; Dale (Penny) Harpe of Leadville, Colo.; Duane (Pat) Harpe of Woodland Park, Colo.; Diane (Winston) Adema of New Era, Mich.; Deanna (Alan) Reed of Rockford, Mich.; 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ellamae, two brothers, Al and Joe and three sisters, Jean, Marie and Millie. Funeral services were at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby, Saturday, May 10. Memorials to Hospice of the Blue Grass, 1317 Kentucky Hwy 62E, Cynthiana, KY 41031 are appreciated.

LAKELAND, Fla. - Max Harvey Hart, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Traverse City and Mt. Morris, passed away suddenly on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 66 years old.

Max was a very friendly, outgoing man who would usually show his affection with a tease. He was especially fond of children and considered all children he met as his own.

Max was born the youngest of nine children to Earl Allen Sr. and Annie Dee (Sorrell) Hart in Flint on June 9, 1938.

At age 17, he joined the United States Air Force and served part of his tour of duty in Japan. Upon his return, he met and married Sandra K. (Kelenske), his wife of forty-three years.

Max is survived by his wife Sandra; son, Brent and wife, Dawn; daughter, Kelly Mulry and husband, Patrick; daughter, Kristin Polakovich and husband, Kevin; and son, Jason; his grandchildren, (the lights of his life), Bronte' and Arianna Hart, Devon, Makaila, and Collin Mulry, and Max and Ian Polakovich; and his special buddy, Austin Olson. He is also survived by siblings, Wilmo James, Earl Hart, Joy Nelson, Rosemary Monroe and husband, Elmer, and Jacquelyn Biechler and husband, Gilbert; sister-in-law, Carolyn Hart; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Max was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beatrice Raymond and Margaret Payne; and brother, Kenneth Hart.

Max was a man who looked forward to life's challenges and met each one with dedication and passion. He wore many hats during his life, including truck driver, embalmer, sheriff's deputy and volunteer firefighter. He approached all of these with the same loyalty and dedication most men reserve only for their families.

Max retired from the plant engineering department at Munson Medical Center in 2000, after 20 years of service. He started the Hotel, Hospital and Bartenders Union Local 51 shortly after his hiring at Munson. He was the financial secretary/treasurer for Local 51 from its inception until its disbandment upon his retirement. He was a brother of the Masonic Lodge #597 in Empire, a Shriner and a supporter of the 4-H Livestock Program in northern Michigan.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris, from noon until 3 p.m. A memorial service will follow at the same location at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association, in Max's name, would be appreciated.

Max is a man that will be missed by many. He never met a stranger ... to him, all were friends. Max was well liked, well loved, and well respected. We love you, Pop!

Mrs. Harteng Passed Away Yesterday Morning at Solon

Mrs. Kathrine Harteng, one of the pioneers of Leelanau county, died suddenly yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Antrim Meerels, near Solon, aged 78 years. She leaves three sons and two daughters, John Harteng, captain of the boat that runs on Carp Lake, who lives at Leland, William Harteng, of Charlevoix, Henry Harteng and Mrs. L. Meerels of Solon. Her funeral will be held tomorrow at 1 o'clock from the German church at Solon, under the direction of Undertaker Anderson.

KINGSLEY - Nancy Bennett-Haycraft, 53, of Kingsley, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.

Nancy was a unique woman who exemplified amazing qualities. She was always full of energy, always doing, doing, doing. She gave to others in a loving and kind way regardless of the circumstances.

Nancy was never met without a happy smile and a hug. Those closest to her will never forget her silly and fun, childlike way. Nancy was a woman with a faithful Christian spirit. She will be greatly missed.

Nancy, beloved mother, wife and friend, is survived by her husband, Earl Haycraft; son, Stacey (Rebecca) Stanislaw; daughter, Sara Nicole Bennett, and her father, Larry Bennett; and best friend, Barbara Martinsen.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at 4:30 p.m., from the Kingsley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Char Minger officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Educational fund for her daughter, Sara Bennett.

TRAVERSE CITY - Iris Joan Hayes, 82, of Traverse City, previously from Toledo, Ohio, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004. Born June 5, 1922, in Tiptree, Essex County, England, she was the daughter of Clifford and Kate (Bell) Cottee. On July 19, 1944, in Tiptree, Essex County, England, she married Clyde Mack Hayes.

Iris served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, during which time she met and married her husband, coming to America on the Queen Mary. Once married, Iris was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, especially baking cookies. She also liked to knit and read.

She was a member of the Traverse City Church of Christ, being active by helping out on several committees.

Survivors include her husband, Clyde Mack; three children, Evelyn (Ray) Deselms of Lambertville, Richard Hayes of Grand Rapids and Jennifer Hayes of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Dorrie, Jessica and Asa; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, George (Betty) Cottee, Tip Cottee, Tony (Ann) Cottee and Robert (Kate) Cottee; and three sisters, Betty Ball, Chris (Pete) Frost and Janet Olley.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Traverse City Church of Christ, with Harold Reddick officiating.

The family asks those wishing to give memorials to please remember the Traverse City Church of Christ Ghana Ministry Fund. Envelopes will be available at the church.

TRAVERSE CITY - Louise Evelyn Hedlund, 81, went to be with the Lord at her Traverse City home, with her daughters by her side on Sunday, June 29, 2003. Formerly of the Traverse City area, Florida and Livonia, she relocated to Traverse City in 1993. Along with her husband, Louise owned and operated the Poly Clean Laundromat in Traverse City, and also worked as a housekeeper at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Louise loved to work in her flower garden, enjoyed baking and cooking and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Born July 27, 1921, in Bendon, she was the daughter of John and Marie (Stetina) Skrobak. On Jan. 2, 1945, in Tonepah, Nev., she married Elmer "Pete" Hedlund, who preceded her in death in 1989. Survivors include three daughters, Joyce (Roger) Steinmiller of Plymouth, Dorothy (Jerome) McGuire of Glendale Heights, Ill., Gloria (Gary) Hanna of Traverse City; brother, William Skrobak of Bendon; sister, Helen Kocevar of Bendon; nine grandchildren, Kenneth (Donna) Steinmiller, Kimberly (Bruce) Hobbins, Jolene (David) Hauge, William (Andrea) Steinmiller, Diane (Carl) Luedke, Melina (Roger) Maryanski, Michelle (John) Jacquish, Michael McGuire, Jeffrey McGuire; nine great-grandchildren, Jessica and David Luedke, Michael, Olivia and Nicholas Hobbins, Kaitlyn and Jason Maryanski, Lauren and Ryan Hauge; and many nieces and nephews. Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Ann Wojakowski; and grandsons, David and Jason McGuire. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, where members of the V.F.W. Walsh Post #4499 will conduct graveside military services.

NILES - Virginia Mae Heminger, 82, of Niles, died at Silverbrook Manor in Niles Friday, Dec. 24, 2004.

She was born in Benton Harbor on April 17, 1922. She lived nearly 45 years in southwest lower Michigan. On. Jan. 13, 1940, she married Frank Deliman Heminger in Benton Harbor. He preceded her in death Sept. 28, 2001. In 1963 the family moved to Traverse City.

Virginia worked as a school cook in the Traverse City schools for 20 years. She was a member of the Sewing Club of Traverse City.

She is survived by her sons, Richard (Connie) Heminger and Ronald (Imogene) Heminger, both of Buchanan, Robert Heminger of Traverse City, Thomas (Kathy) Heminger of Lake Ann, Donald (Bonnie) Heminger of Grand Rapids and William (Cheryl) Heminger of Mesick; 15 grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; and a sister, Doris Zech of St. Joseph.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Silverbrook Manor Nursing Home in Niles.

TRAVERSE CITY - Lauren Elizabeth Hemming, 21, died on Thursday at home in Traverse City after a nine-month battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 7, 1983, Lauren grew up near Bowers Harbor on the Old Mission Peninsula and attended Traverse City Central High School, graduating in 2001. A senior at Michigan Tech in Houghton studying civil engineering, she previously attended Hillsdale College for two years, where she studied mathematics and art. A talented artist, Lauren loved to draw, paint and take pictures. She was also a passionate outdoors person, enjoying snowboarding, cross-country skiing, hiking, biking and swimming.

Beautiful inside and out, Lauren surrounded herself with many special friends and knew how to have fun. She was also very strong, facing her illness head-on and being determined to live life to the fullest in spite of having to undergo exhaustive treatments both in Traverse City and at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Last June, despite having lost her hair to chemotherapy, she decided to become a candidate for National Cherry Festival Queen. While she wasn't well enough to compete during the final selection process, her decision to participate was an inspiration to others around the United States dealing with cancer who sent letters of encouragement and congratulations.

Lauren is survived by her parents, Jed and Dawn Hemming; her beloved sister, Lisa; her loving boyfriend, Patrick McCabe; maternal grandparents, Bernard and Yvonne Schmitz; paternal grandparents, Jack and Virginia Hemming; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

Cremation has taken place. An informal celebration of Lauren's life will be held Friday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m., at the Hagerty Center inside the new Maritime facility on the NMC Great Lakes Campus on Front Street in Traverse City.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Wings of Mercy, which helped make it possible for Lauren and her family to return home to Traverse City while receiving treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The Wings of Mercy address is 703 Park Avenue, Litchfield, MN 55355.

TRAVERSE CITY - Marshall Ray Houchin, 59, of Traverse City, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at his home following a sudden illness.

The son of the late Leonard and Nola (Jagger) Houchin, he was born Nov. 13, 1945, in Kokomo, Ind., and was later raised on a farm in Greenville, Ind. On Dec. 4, 1976, in Louisville, Ky., he married the former Dixie Y. Lewis.

At the age of twenty one, Marshall lost his eyesight but never lost his ability to maintain a quality lifestyle. He gained much independence after he received his first leader dog, which definitely enabled him to broaden his horizons.

He was a very dedicated husband and father, and took great pride in the fact that he was always gainfully employed. For eleven years he was employed by the Grand Traverse Resort as a stewarding supervisor. At the resort, Marshall was extremely well liked and had the philosophy that he didn't require anything from his coworkers that he wasn't willing to do himself. He later was employed at Chili's Bar and Grill, and most recently at the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.

Marshall, along with his wife, Dixie, were longtime members of the Greater Life Apostolic Church, where he was baptized in Jesus' name in 1986. Marshall enjoyed talking on the phone and his frequent rides on the Bata Bus. He was affectionately known as the man with few limitations.

Survivors include his wife, Dixie of Traverse City; daughter, Jeanie Marie (John) Chandler of Traverse City; son, Jesse Houchin of Traverse City; and his precious granddaughter, Olivia Rose. He is also survived by their Jamaican daughter, Jennifer; brother, Steven (Veronica) Dishman of Corydon, Ind.; several nieces and nephews; as well as his best friend, Carl (Gloria) Onstott of Marengo, Ind., who was like a brother to him.

Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, Feb. 3, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. D. Kevin Willis and the Rev. Earl Carrier officiating. Private burial services will be held at a later date in Indiana.

Grace A. (Johnson) House
Died January 19, 2005
GRAND RAPIDS - Grace A. (Johnson) House, formerly of Traverse City, passed away at age 90 Jan. 19, 2005, at the Hearthstone Assisted Living Community in Kentwood.

Born in Bessemer on Aug. 31, 1914, to J.R. and Clara Johnson, Grace graduated from Stout College in Wisconsin. A talented and creative seamstress and weaver, Grace also taught home economics, history and chemistry at the high school level for many years in the Suttons Bay and Glen Lake school systems.

She is survived by her children, Susan Letherby of Grand Rapids, Elizabeth (Walter) Nagel of Saginaw and Robert (Patricia) House of Waltham, Mass. Grace was very proud of her seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by Garland "Shanty" House, her husband of 51 years.

The family especially wishes to thank the staff of Hearthstone Assisted Living for their compassionate care; and granddaughter, Becky Letherby, for her loving aid.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Rd., SE, in Grand Rapids.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hearthstone Assisted Living, 4352 Breton Rd. SE, Kentwood, MI 49512.

GENESEO - Floyd E. Hubbard Jr., 85, of Ripley, died Wednesday Feb. 9, 2005, at his daughter's home in Geneseo.

He was born March 10, 1919, in Ripley, a son of the late Floyd D. and Zenn Hewitt Hubbard.

He had attended Ripley Central School and was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He had owned and operated F. Hubbard Trucking in Ripley from 1936 until his retirement in 1977.

He was a life member of the Ripley Hose Co., and former Fire Commissioner, a life member of the American Legion, former Town Councilman, and a member of the Moose Lodge #118. He enjoyed fishing, camping and golfing.

He is survived by his second wife, Virginia Newkirk of Traverse City; two sons, Robert Lee (Betty) Hubbard of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and Eugene (Debbie) Hubbard of Ripley; three daughters, Betty (Jack) Foster of Pasadena, Md., Eleanora "Shorty" Belson of Ripley and Charlene Gross of Geneseo; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; a stepson, Jack Wise of Traverse City; and four stepdaughters, Dianne Coffmen of Kalamazoo, Pat Raush, Sharon Newberry and Penny Wise, all of Traverse City.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Abby Hubbard in 1985; a brother, Devillo Hubbard in 1997; a sister, Rowena Scott in 1996; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Mathews Funeral Home, Inc., 104 West Main Street, in Ripley, today, Feb. 13, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and are invited to attend the services there on Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Les Drayer officiating. Interment will be held privately in the Quincy Cemetery.

NILES - Ruth E. Huffine, 87, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Orchard Hill Adult Foster Care in Brethren.

She was born July 23, 1917, in Carlinville, Ill., the daughter of Andrew and Anna Giffen. On Aug. 27, 1934, Ruth married Malcolm J. Huffine in Carlinville. She was a member of Bertrand Bible Church in Niles.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Anne (Al) Young of Honor; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Andrew Giffen of Troy; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm in March of 2004; and daughter, Janet L. Njus in August of 2002.

Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18, at noon, at the First Congregational Church of Benzonia, with the Rev. Steve Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Platte Township Cemetery in the spring.

Ruth E. Huffine
Died January 14, 2005
NILES - Ruth E. Huffine, 87, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Orchard Hill Adult Foster Care in Manistee.

She was born on July 23, 1917, in Christopher, Ill., the daughter of Andrew and Anna Giffen. On Aug. 27, 1934, Ruth married Malcolm J. Huffine in Carlinville. She was a member of Bertrand Bible Church in Niles.

TRAVERSE CITY - Robert "Bob" Humphrey, 67, of Traverse City, died at his home on Monday, Feb. 21, 2005.

Bob was born in Munising on June 25, 1937, the son of Alger R. and Bernice (Smedley) Humphrey. He married the former Helen Marie Thayer on Aug. 30, 1957, in Elk Rapids.

Bob was self-employed in the excavating business and Traverse Bay Gravel Company.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed going to the Casino.

Bob was a member of the American Military League, Eagles Aries #383 and the Interlochen Eagles.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen Humphrey of Traverse City; one son, Alger Robert H. (Candice) Humphrey II of Grawn; two daughters, Pam (Owen) Grubaugh and Karen (Mike) Palmer, both of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Robert P. (Danielle) Humphrey, Tyler Palmer, Corey Palmer, Matt Humphrey, Jenny Humphrey and Jessie Humphrey; brother, Elton (Gerry) Humphrey of Traverse City; three sisters, Violet (Allen) Nash of California, Irene (Al) Ockert of Traverse City and Ruth (Edwin) Maze of Mecosta; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by "Tiny," his English Springer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Floyd Humphrey, Frank Humphrey and Eugene Peterson; and an infant sister, Norine.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Louis Grettenberger will officiate. Burial will take place in the Barnum Cemetery in the spring.

Memorials may be directed to the ALS Association or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.

HIGHLANDS, N.C. - James B. Hurst III of Highlands, N.C., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in Brevard, N.C. He was born June 21, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio. On March 28, 1992, he married Janett Hubble, who survives in Highlands, N.C.

James graduated from Parma Senior High School, class of 1955. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957.

He coached American Legion Baseball and Independent Leagues from 1968 to 1982. While coaching baseball, he touched the lives of many young people with his dedication to the sport. Many kids would enjoy the picnic and horse rides after Saturday practice at the farm on Emerson Road.

James retired from the Michigan Employment Security Commission in 1992, after 20 years of service. He enjoyed helping people find work during his 20 years at the MESC office, and touched many lives in doing so.

He loved to hunt, fish, bowl, and raise flowers and vegetables in his gardens, moving to Highlands, N.C. in 2001 to enjoy his retirement and gardening.

Surviving are his children, James B. (LouAnn) Hurst IV of Traverse City, Nancy (Jim) VanHall of Fremont, John (Vickie) Hurst of Traverse City, Joe (Marcy) Hurst of Traverse City, Amy (Tony) Lucero of Panama City Beach, Fla., Tim (Felieca) Hubble, Terry Hubble of Durango, Colo., Jeanne (Tim) Komi of Traverse City, Kathy (Frank) Bussa of Elk Rapids, Mary Jo (Ken) Campbell of Stafford, Va., and Rick (Kashy) Hubble of Durango, Colo.; 28 grandchildren; sister, Margret Hurst of Cleveland, Ohio; brother-in-law, Richard D. Turner of Avon Lake, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Julie Turner.

A celebration of Life will be held in May of 2005 at the Elk Rapids AMVETS post.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the charity of one's choice.

ALLEGAN - Martha Hyslop, of Allegan, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Hyslop was born Feb. 2, 1911, in Chicago, the daughter of Dr. Albert J. and Emily (Sieg) Prescott. The family soon moved to Old Mission, where Martha grew up.

She attended secretarial school in Chicago and returned to work at the State Hospital in Traverse City, where she met her future husband, Dr. William T. Hyslop. They were married in Old Mission in 1939, and made their home in Traverse City.

In 1954, they moved to Saginaw with their four children, where Martha became active in local community organizations. Every summer, the family resided at The Pines, which was shared by a large, extended family and operated as a summer resort. Martha was widely known as a warm and charming hostess to all. In 1972, Martha and her husband retired to Old Mission.

She was well-known and active in community affairs, a life-long member of the Old Mission Congregational Church and Ladies' Aid, and a member of the Old Mission Historical Society and Old Mission Women's Club.

Martha was a dedicated naturalist and conservationist, and an early pioneer of preserving the scenic beauty of the Old Mission Peninsula.

Surviving are four children, Robert S. Hyslop of Portland, Ore., William A. Hyslop of Old Mission, John Morton (Michele) Hyslop of Allegan and Mary (William) Jones of Allegan; three grandchildren, Brian W. Hyslop of Eugene, Ore., Tracy A. Hyslop of Kalamazoo and Erin M. (Nate) Fuller of Kalamazoo; as well as a large and loving extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William T. Hyslop in 1999.

A memorial service will be held in the spring in Old Mission.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, Dougherty House Fund.
