Traverse City Record-Eagle January 12, 2005 KINGSLEY - Aldon R. Jackman, 72, of Kingsley, formerly of Traverse City, died at Birchwood Nursing Center on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. He was born in Grawn on April 12, 1932, the son of Alvia L. and Vivian A. (Knabenshue) Jackman. On Dec. 4, 1954, he married Shirley Steiner in Traverse City. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Al was a self-employed carpenter and a long-time member of the world wide congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and working puzzles. He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed sharing Bible truths with others. A special treat for him was spending time with his grandsons and beautiful granddaughters. He will always be remembered for his kind, warm and caring personality. Aldon is survived by two sons, Jeffrey (Lynette) of Kingsley and Randy (Brenda) of Ontonagon; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Arp and Betty Archer, both of Traverse City; brother, Joseph (Sue) of Union, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley, in June of 1983; his parents; two brothers, Earl and Robert; and two sisters, Virginia Dese and Shirley Melichar. A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at 3 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on M-113 in Kingsley, where the family will greet friends and family one hour prior to the service. Mr. Craig Bloxsom will conduct the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Traverse City Record-Eagle February 17, 2005 SUTTONS BAY - Elaine Ruth John, 87, of Suttons Bay, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, in the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law's home. Elaine will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Elaine was born July 15, 1917, in Chicago, Ill. She was the daughter of Henry and Theresa (Boerma) VanderPloeg. On Nov. 23, 1939, she married Dallas B. John in Chicago, Ill. Elaine loved to play classical music on her piano. She loved creativity, especially her sewing. Professionally, she worked as an office manager for 25 years. She was a long-standing member of the First Congregational Church of Lombard, Ill. She is survived by two daughters, Wendy (Bill) Morris of Seattle Wash., and Diane (Lee) Arcure of Suttons Bay; two sons, Dallas of Denver, Colo., and Christopher (Heather) of Highland Ranch, Colo., a sister, Phyllis (Edward) Hedlund of Belmont; a brother, James VanderPloeg of Boynton Beach, Fla., a sister-in-law, Eleanor Waterhouse of Sterling, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Christopher of Ypsilanti, Lee of Farmington Hills, Sarah and Katie, both of Highland Ranch, Colo. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Henry Jr. and Donald; and her sister, Eunice Poley. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Lombard, Ill. Visitation will take place Wednesday, March 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home, Grayling. She was born in Ottawa, Kan., Jan. 16, 1912, the daughter of Roy and Iris G. (Tice) Britt. Geraldine was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Howell, Ruth Circle, and Hilltoppers. She is survived by her son, Jack (Joan) Calvin of Traverse City; daughter, Iris (Jim) Henwood of Grand Rapids; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Claudia and Bob Jolliff of Howell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen, March 12, 2002. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being made by MacDonald's Funeral Home, Howell. Traverse City Record-Eagle February 4, 2005 BRIGHTON - Geraldine Katherine Jolliff, 92, of Brighton, formerly of Pickney, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004. Born Jan. 16, 1912, in Kansas, she was the daughter of Roy and Iris G. (Tice) Britt. She was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Howell, Ruth Circle and Hilltoppers. She is survived by her son, Jack (Joan) Calvin of Traverse City; and daughter, Iris (Jim) Henwood of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Claudia and Bob Jolliff of Howell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen on March 12, 2002; and grandson, Steven on Dec. 10, 1999. Memorial services will be held Thursday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m., from the first United Methodist Church, 1230 Bower St., Howell, MI. The Rev. Charles Jacob's will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, from 1 to 9 p.m., at the Braun-Everiss-Wagley Funeral Home in Adrian. Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home, where visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Local arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Traverse City Record-Eagle January 8, 2005 CENTRAL LAKE - Carl E. Jones, 70, of Central Lake, formerly of Sand Creek, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at his home. He was born on June 26, 1934, in Johnson City, Tenn., the son of John Paul and May (Blevins) Jones. He resided in Sand Creek for many years, and was employed for Ford Motor Company in Saline before retiring in 1996. He moved to Central Lake in Antrim County in 2003. Carl served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On April 24, 1976, in Adrian, he married E.J. (Elmira) Browning, who survives. Also surviving are six children, Rhonda (Toby) Hines of Archibald, Ohio, Shane (Amanda) Jones of Central Lake, Destry Jones of Sand Creek, Clint Jones of Sand Creek, and Dakota and Colt Jones, both of Central Lake. In addition to his children, he is survived by two sisters, Deanna (Phillip) Dotson of Adrian and Ina (Howard) Willit of Titusville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Amy and Justin Hines and Carl Eugene Jones III; as well as several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Victor Ortiz; and many friends and loved ones. Preceding Carl in death were his parents; two sisters, Pauline Ortiz and Louise Taylor; and two sons, John Paul Jones and Carl Eugene Jones Jr. Visitation will take place on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, from 1 to 9 p.m., at the Braun-Everiss-Wagley Funeral Home in Adrian. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home, where visitation will also take place from 11 a.m. until the time of services. Contributed by Sharon Compton Baatz Traverse City Record-Eagle Esther Montgomery Jones Died March 10, 2005 KALKASKA - Esther Montgomery Jones, 92, of Kalkaska, passed away on March 10, 2005, at Brigadoon Assisted Living in Traverse City. Born on Oct. 3, 1912, in Orange Township, Kalkaska County, she was the daughter of James A. and Mary (Ryckman) Montgomery. Esther graduated from Mancelona High School in Antrim County and continued her education at Antrim County Normal. She taught rural grade school at Ellsworth in Antrim County and taught at Spencer Grade School in Kalkaska County. Esther moved to Detroit in the early 1930s and went to work as a key punch operator at Michigan Gas. She next went to work for Sealtest Dairy, which she retired from in 1969, after working for 26 years. She married Charles W. Jones on Jan. 23, 1937, in Detroit. Esther was a past member of Westminster Church in Detroit. She transferred her membership to East Boardman United Methodist Church in 1993 when she moved to the Traverse City area. She later moved to Brigadoon Assisted Living and appreciated the loving care and support she received there. Surviving Esther are her nieces and nephews, Jane Ann (Ed) Bole of Ohio, Ellen Montgomery of South Boardman, Patty Cox of Kalkaska, Martin R. (Roberta) Woodhams of Kalkaska, Gene Woodhams of Fife Lake, Donald Montgomery of California, Martha Montgomery of Detroit and Ruth E. Montgomery of Traverse City; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Jones; brothers and sisters, Julia Woodhams, Alvah Montgomery, Gary Montgomery, Phyllis Montgomery and Kathryn Montgomery; and her nephews, Victor Woodhams and Gordon Montgomery. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2005, at 2:30 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, where visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Interment will be the in the Lodi Cemetery in the spring when weather permits. Memorials may be given on behalf of Esther Montgomery Jones to the East Boardman United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2080 Boardman Road SW, South Boardman, MI 49680.
