CENTRAL LAKE - Nettie "May" Loper of Central Lake, 98, peacefully passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.

May was born June 9, 1906, in Quincey, Ky., to Charles W. and Clara A. (Anderson) Loper. While she was still a babe in arms, the family moved to Michigan, eventually settling in Central Lake, where May spent the rest of her life.

On Jan. 10, 1924, in Bellaire, she married Homer Loper. She was widowed in 1968, but continued to live in the home "down by the park" that they had established in 1924. In 2002, her deteriorating health required admittance to Meadow Brook, where she resided until her death.

Homer and May both worked for "Dud" and Naomi Carney, and Blain Wilson publishing the Central Lake Torch through much of the 1920s. Homer ran the printing press and May the linotype machine, and both performed other tasks as needed. When daughter, Vivian, was born, May became a wonderful full-time mother, helping out only occasionally at "The Torch Office."

She was a charter member of Grace Community Church, where she faithfully served as church pianist for many years.

She was a talented seamstress and also did beautiful needlework. Every member of her family has cherished pieces of her work.

May never could say enough good words about the members of the Central Lake community, always reminding her family of how much she "loved those dear hearts and gentle people who live in my home town." The same feeling was abundantly clear in how she felt about those who cared for her so lovingly and with such respect and dignity at Meadow Brook. She always referred to them as "angels of mercy."

She will be sorely missed by a host of friends, but most of all by daughter, Vivian; son-in-law, Doug; grandson, Alan; granddaughter-in-law, Carol; great-granddaughter, Sheri; great-granddaughter, Kelly, and her husband, Ali; brother, Bernard Loper; several nieces and nephews; and Pauline Scott, who was like a second daughter to her in every way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer; her parents; an infant son, Clair; an infant daughter, Joyce; and four brothers, Jack, Tuff, Earl and William.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Grace Community Church, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Southern Cemetery in Central Lake Township.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts in her name be made to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.

Arrangements are by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
