ALDEN - Frances Ofer, 89, of Alden, formerly of Moorpark, Calif., passed away on Thursday, evening, Feb. 17, 2005, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, holding the hand of her beloved son-in-law, Jim Adams. He will always cherish the memory of her eyes recognizing him as she took her last breath.

She suffered a massive stroke on Feb. 8, 2005, and for the last three days of her life was under the care of Mercy Cranbrook Hospice. We will never forget the care and concern shown to our mother and her family by the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Joseph Mercy.

Our mother married John Ofer in Detroit in August of 1939. They raised their family in Ferndale and Utica. In 1977, they followed their son and his family to California. Four of their children and families also made the exodus over the next few years. Until John died in July of 1987, Mother and Daddy shared many wonderful years in California with friends and family.

Mother moved back to Michigan five and a half months ago to reside with her daughter, Fran, and son-in-law, Jim Adams, in Alden. Her last months were busy and active as she was squired around to hair and doctor appointments by her son-in-law. She enjoyed attending Red Hat society functions, Juniper Garden Club and going out to dinner with family and friends.

We are grateful that our mother was able to reach out and give hugs to each of her children and other family members that were at her bedside in her last days. We will remember that our mother loved each of us unconditionally!

Our mother is survived by her five children, Francele (Jim) Adams of Alden, Paul (Karin ) Ofer of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Suzanne Kritcher of Moorpark, Calif., and Marian (Mike) Moir and Mary Jane Fisher of Newbury Park, Calif.

Frances is also survived by her Michigan grandchildren, Melinda (Ken) Wolvin and Theresa (Dave) Driest; and her great-grandchildren, Jacob Wolvin and David and Stephen Driest.

Her surviving grandchildren from California are Christian (Aidee) Ofer, Michelle (Shane) Roberts, Timothy Moir, Cara (Eric) Hedlund and Sean (Laraine) Fisher; and her great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ofer and Sierra Marie Roberts.

A Mass will be held today, Feb. 24, 2005, at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church in Elk Rapids. Mass cards and Building Fund envelopes will be available at the church and the hall.

Frances' remains will be taken to her family in California to have a service and have her ashes placed with her husband's.
