TRAVERSE CITY - Jack Leonard Wilkinson, 89, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.

Jack was born on June 2, 1915, in Detroit, to Thomas and Cecelia (Schneider) Wilkinson. When he was 15, his mother and stepfather, George Harms, moved the family to Houston. Jack graduated from the John Reagon High School in Houston in 1932, and shortly thereafter he and his family moved back to Detroit.

He attended the University of Michigan and Hillsdale College. In 1936 he became a partner with his stepfather in a carpet store in downtown Detroit.

He married Ellen Hyner on Oct. 1, 1938, in Ferndale, and in 1954, they moved with their three children to Traverse City. Ellen preceded him in death on April 25, 1979.

In 1980, Jack moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., to be near his elderly mother. In July of 1981, he married Alice Woodmanse, who died on Nov. 13, 2004. At that time, Jack decided to return to Traverse City, which he did on Dec. 1, 2004.

Jack was ingenious, imaginative, and multi-talented. He was a championship swimmer and baseball player, a saxophonist, horseshoe player and gifted artist. He could solve jumble puzzles in less than two minutes, cook gourmet meals at a moments notice, and entertain large and small audiences for hours with his amazing magic tricks.

He was a super salesman and a creative entrepreneur, having founded both Country Squire Men's Wear and Benjamin Twiggs Cherry products. A former member of Kiwanis and Optimists Clubs in California and Michigan, Jack was always involved in the service projects of the clubs.

A lover of animals, Jack could instantly tame the angriest of dogs, having them wagging their tails within minutes, and in a short period of time have them doing tricks. But most of all, he was a loyal friend, a wonderful father, and a caring, loving husband.

In addition to his wives, Jack was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, two sisters and a brother. He is survived by his son, Thomas Wilkinson of Ann Arbor; his daughters, Suzy (Dean) Ringsmuth, and Jane (Norman) Fred of Traverse City; and his stepdaughter, Marian (Gregory) Brott of Sacramento, Calif.; his grandchildren, Blake (Yvette) Ringsmuth of Traverse City, David Fred of Traverse City, Ellen (Robert) Fred-Martel of Alameda, Calif., Zachary Wilkinson of Ann Arbor, Jacob Wilkinson of Olympia, Wash., and Nicholas Wilkinson of Huntington Beach, Calif.; his step-grandchildren, Heidi (Daniel) Larsen of Missoula, Mont., and Nathan (Alicia) Brott of Grass Valley, Calif.; his great-grandchildren, Sage and Tristan Ringsmuth; and his step great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jack and Sophie Larsen and Ryan, Ivy and Benjamin Brott; and many nieces and nephews.

According to his wishes, Jack was cremated. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City. Visitation will be at the church beginning one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1050 Peninsula Drive, Traverse City, MI 49686.

TRAVERSE CITY - Francis "Will" Willsey, a self-proclaimed "good architect," and a longtime Silver Lake resident, died Friday morning at Munson Medical Center. He was 89.

Growing up on the western shore of Silver Lake, Will and his siblings, Thelma and Kenneth, enjoyed swimming, boating and taking part in running The Silver Lake Inn with their parents. It was there that Will's love of nature and beauty began.

From the University of Michigan, Will received a bachelor's of arts degree in landscape architecture. He then worked for the Michigan Planning Commission in Battle Creek, where he met and married Virginia (Zuber).

Will was accepted as an apprentice into the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin Fellowship, where he and Virginia lived for three years. In order to supervise the construction of a house in Northport that Mr. Wright designed, the couple moved back to Michigan. Will was later employed by the L.C. Kingscott Co., designing homes for the Battle Creek area. When asked what kind of architect he was, Will always answered, "A good one!" It was his life's work, yet he took time to enjoy many other facets of life, including owning The Silver Lake Inn after his parents died, adding to it a Gift Shop and The Brass Owl Gallery.

Those surviving include his wife of 62 years, Virginia (Zuber) Willsey; his lifetime friend and brother, Kenneth; a niece, Julie Black; a nephew, Michael (Becky) Willsey; and his nephew's children, Liza and Adam.
