JOHN O'NEIL, farmer on section 35, Deerfield Tp., was born in Ireland, June 10, 1828. His parents, Patrick and Janes (Garner) O'Neil, were natives of Wicklow Co., Ireland, and emigrated to Canada, where they are still living, in advanced age. Mr. O'Neil was 18 years of age when he accompanied his parents to Canada. He was a resident of the Dominion about 15 years and came to Shiawassee Co., Mich., buying 40 acres of land, which he afterwards sold, and after a years labor as a farm hand he again bought another farm, of which he disposed and came to Mecosta Co., and bought 80 acres of unimproved land in Deerfield Tp., where he now resides; he has 50 acres under the plow. Mr. O'Neil is independent in political action and, with his family belongs to the Catholic Church. He was married in 1851 to Mary, daughter of James and Mary Martin. They have nine children, five of whom are now living: Patrick, James, John, Michael and Jane; those deceased were Mary, William, Margaret and Ambrose. |
