Holly Water Works
Big Rapids

Our city put in the Holly system in 1871, at an expense of $66,000. The engine and pumps are located in a brick building on the bank of the Muskegon river, about four squares east of the center of the city. A reservoir was constructed near a large and never failing spring from which to obtain water for ordinary domestic purposes, and a canal was cut from the river to the reservoir through which water is let into the latter for use in case of fire. About two and a half miles of main pipe extend along the principal streets, furnishing ample and exhaustless protection against fire to all business and manufacturing property and to most of the private residences. The water is also used very generally for domestic and ornamental purposes.
