STREETSCAPE BRINGS NEW VITALITY TO DOWNTOWN
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Big Rapids Streetscape project in 1989 offered the promise of a new, modern look to the city's downtown district fullfilled upon completion with new sidewalks, brick street crossings, flower planters, directional signs, parking facilities and more. Despite numerious delays and problems between the city and the contractors for the Streetscape Project, the $1.3 million downtown makeover did add a new look to the city's historic downtown district. But, it did create a bit of turmoil and frustration while work was in progress. (Pioneer file photos)
