Battery "K" of the 1st. Michigan Artillery was rendezvoused at Grand Rapids, from where, they were mustered into the service of the United States on the 20th. of February, 1863, having as its officers: Captain John C. Schuetz, of Detroit. First Lieutenant Adolph Schill, Detroit. Second Lieutenant Christopher Hupert of Detroit.They moved from the rendezvous under the command of Captain Schuetz, with 104 officers and men on its rolls, under orders to proceed to Washington, arriving there on the 1st. of March. They remained there until May 23rd., when they were ordered to garrison Forts Ramsey and Buffalo, at Upton's Hill, Va. In June they went to Camp Barry outside of Washington, remaining there until the 28th. of October, when they left Washington for Nashville, Tennessee, having been assigned to the Army of the Cumberland.
They arrived at Nashville, November the 12th., remaining there as part of the Reserve Artillery until the 6th. of March, 1864. They then marched to Chattanooga, where they arrived on the 19th. The horses were here turned over to the proper Department, the Battery then ordered to garrison Battery Bushnell, one of the fortifications of Chattanooga. Four detachments were detailed from the Battery during the summer and fall of 1864, for service on gunboats and transports. One detachment of 37 men was attached to the 13th. New York Battery, another to Battery "I", of the 1st. Michigan Artillery. One officer was attached to Battery "I", 1st. New York Artillery, all of these tn the 20th. Corp. The remaining portion of the Battery assisted in repelling the attack, made by the rebel General Wheeler's forces on Dalton. There headquarters on the 1st. of November, 1864, were at Chattanooga.
From November 1, 1864, until March 31, 1865, this Battery was stationed at Chattanooga, then at the latter date moved to Riceville, Tennessee, where they remained until ordered to Michigan for muster out, arriving in Detroit July 12th., where on the 22nd., they were discharged from the service, paid off and disbanded.
During the war the Battery was principally on duty in fortifications, on gunboats and transports, and although they only saw action at Dalton, Ga. they performed much hard service.
