The Seventh Cavalry was raised under the supervision of the Honorable F.W. Kellog, with its rendezvous at Grand Rapids, its muster into the United States service was done piecemeal and at different dates.The First Battalion of the Regiment, under the command of Colonel Mann, left its rendezvous at Grand Rapids on the 20th. of February, 1863, bound for Washington, where Michigan Cavalry units were being formed into a single Brigade, the remaining companies joining the following May.
During its entire time in the service of the United States, they were assigned to the famous, Michigan Brigade, under the command of Brigadier General George A. Custer.
