Alvin enlisted at Woodbridge, Michigan, at the age of 28 for 3 years of service on March 29, 1864, and took the muster oath on April 8, 1864. He was reported as "Missing in Action" near Petersburg, Virginia, on October 27, 1864. He returned to the regiment at Petersburg, Virginia, on February 20, 1865. On July 28, 1865, he was mustered out of the service at Delaney House, District of Columbia.
