From Washtenaw County, Michigan, Alanson enlisted on August 5, 1861 at Saline, Michigan, for three years service at the age of 24. He was promoted to Corporal in October of 1863. He re-enlisted February 10, 1864, at Port Hudson, Louisiana, and was promoted to Sergeant on December 1, 1864. He mustered out at New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 20, 1865. His postwar address was East Jordan, Michigan.Alanson was a member of the Stevens Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 66, East Jordan, Michigan, and was memorialized at the Post's annual encampment that year (with daughter Grace giving a recitation according to the program). At some time following the war, Baldwin did become a homeopathic physician and is so identified in the Post's memorial record as well as Baldwin's death record. He is buried in the City Cemetery at East Jordan.
