William enlisted at Georgetown, Michigan, on as a Corporal on August 21, 1862 at the age of 33 and took the muster oath on August 27, 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant on August 31, 1862. He was killed in action on his birthday at Monterey Gap, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1863. He was buried at the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the Michigan Plot, Grave H- #11.
