From Assyria, Michigan, Charles enlisted on July 31, 1862 at Battle Creek, Michigan, for 3 years of service at the age of 21. He took the Muster Oath on August 16, 1862. He served the rest of the war with the 20th and was Mustered Out at Delaney House, D.C., on May 30, 1865. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery at Bellevue, Michigan.
