From Almont, Michigan, Norvell enlisted on August 14, 1861, for 3 years service at the age of 21. He took the muster oath on September 6, 1861. He was discharged at the expiration of his term of service on February 25, 1865, at Detroit, Michigan. He was an orderly to General Custer and reportedly saved the General's life in battle, blocking a blow to the General with his own sword on July 2, 1863. He is given special mention in General Custer's battle report of the Michigan Cavalry Brigade at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
