Born in the Netherlands he came to the US and was living in Ottawa County, Michigan, when he enlisted on August 22, 1862 at Holland, Michigan, for three years service at the age of 19. He took the muster oath on September 23, 1862. Discharged at Quincy, Illinois, on March 1, 1865, on account of wounds received in action at Resaca, Georgia, on May 14, 1864. His postwar address was Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he died on December 28, 1917.
