From Fenton, Michigan, he enlisted in Company G, 5th Michigan Cavalry for 3 years of service on November 7, 1862, at Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 21. He was promoted to Corporal on October 15, 1864, then to Sergeant on May 1, 1865. He mustered out at Fort leavenworth, Kansas, on June 22, 1865. His postwar residence was Lyons, Michigan.In this post-war photo he is setting on the base of the rear of the Michigan Brigade monument at Gettysburg. In the background is the field where the cavalry action occurred.
