From Holland, Michigan, Louis (spelled Lewis in the records) enlisted on October 18, 1861, at Grand Rapids, Michigan, for 3 years service at the age of 22. He re-enlisted on January 1, 1864, and re-took the muster oath on March 12, 1864. He was mustered out of the service at Nashville, Tennessee, on September 22, 1865. His postwar address was Holland, Michigan.
