Frmo Otsego, Michigan, Cornelius enlisted as a Sergeant on January 3, 1863, for 3 years service at the age of 27. He served the remainder of the war in that capacity and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on September 22, 1865. He died on March 12, 1900, at Otsego and is buried there.
