George W. England

Company G, 8th Michigan Cavalry

An orphan and raised by his Grandparents in Essex County, Ontario, George had come to the United States and enlisted on January 27, 1864, at Pontiac, Michigan, for 3 years at age 18. He reached the regiment, then at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, on February 27, 1864. Was in battles of Knoxville and Nashville. He was reported as Missing in Action on August 2, 1864, on the raid to Macon, Ga. When taken prisoner at Millbury Creek two days after escaping general capture. He lost his weapons, his horse drowned in a river, and he was hunted down by bloodhounds. He climbed a tree where he was taken by rebel citizens. First taken to Andersonville prison, then to Charleston and Florence, SC, was a prisoner for six months. At Florence he was paroled on a 90-day furlough, then rejoined the regiment. He was transferred to Company H on July 20, 1865. He mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on September 22, 1865.

His post war residence was Sanford, Michigan. Note the small Grand Army of the Republic emblem on his tie knot.
