Hiram enlisted at Jackson, Michigan, for 3 years of service on February 25, 1864 at the age of 42. He was discharged at McDougall Hospital, New York Harbor, on June 1, 1865. He is buried at Eaton Rapids, Michigan.He was a cousin of Ulysses Simpson Grant.
